Just played a Galaxie for the first time this last week (although just the clean channel) and fell in love with the Z take on obvious Fender chime and thump. Only Z i've played with that style top end. Sounded so great playing clean Strat stuff, it made me want to switch my whole setup around, from Tele-EL84's to Strat 6L6's.
The Galaxie is probably way too much amp for me. My Q is, does the Z28 have anywhere near the same overall EQ flavor? Haven't played one, but if the cleans were close i'd probably have to bite on one....
cheers thanks

I had a Z28 and currently have a Galaxie (and a MAZ 18 NR). My take is, compared to the Z-28 the Gal has more high end sparkle, much more distortion available, even leaving off Ch2. Gal is more compressed, nasal sounding when driven. EQ of the tone stack is very similar. The 28 is still loud for 2 6V6, though.

The EF86 in the 28 makes for a bit smoother or rounder sound, IMO. I recently acquired both, but I haven't done a side-by-side comp yet. Need more time with the Gal to get up to speed on tones and channel balancing. (I have the older non-MV version.) The 28 is plenty loud for gigs. Of course the Gal has even more on tap. I think the Gal is closer to a vintage Fender sound on channel 1, whereas the 28 is kind of unique with the EF86 front end and the 6V6 power section. Ch. 2 on Galaxie is its own world
