I bought one of these because I was in the market for a stangray and knew I would need one. But I was pleasantly surprised when I hooked it up to my AC15 reissue. I didn't think I needed one for a 15 watt amp with a master volume. But my AC15 has never sounded better. I crank the master volume and for the first time (I play mostly at home so I have to be aware of volume) I heard the sweet sweet sound of my output tubes breaking up. Believe me that is the sound you want from your amp. Much richer harmonic content than that of the preamp tubes distorting. I haven't tried the airbrake on any other amps yet but I could only imagine that any tube amp would benefit tremendously from the airbrake. That is unless you are currently diming the volume anyway. In that case enjoy the music while you can before you go deaf.

I agree. I think they should come with the Ghia. I don't know how I got along without mine before... actually I'm constantly reminded of pre-air brake days when the world is quiet and I hear that ever present ringing in my ears.

I agree, although I bought the Weber Minimass 50W model.
I use it right now together with my old Music Man RD-112-50 with a hornloaded 12" cab enclosure and an EVM-12L speaker.
In the distortion channel I crank the volume up to about seven and the gain to about 6. The Minimass is connected between the amp and the cab - and volume turned down from 10 to about four.
This yields a rather fat raw distorted sound at manegable level. Else to reach the same sound level without the Minimass is very easy, BUT yields a rather thin brittle midrangey sound.
The clean channel I run at about 6-7 on the volume. With full volume on my Tele I get bright fat crunchy sound, but on the clean side. Turning down the volume on the guitar yields a soft clean jazzy sound. Both sounds from the bridge mick on the guitar.
With more experience I feel the Minimass could be used as sound shaping tool to get some specific sounds - at more humanane levels - than without it.
Cheers: Dixiechicken

Got mine yesterday, and it's like I have a new Maz 18 Jr.
The master volume really does affect the tone stack and it's just two loud to experiment in your living room. With the Air Brake, I can crank the master volume and adjust the tone stack w/o losing hearing!
It's a very useful tool, and it makes me think that I could really get into a more powerful Z even though I mostly do home/jam/bar playing.

I just got one last week, and now I know what my already fantastic-sounding Route 66 is capable of doing.
I've been having to keep the volume around 9 o'clock or lower - you know, right next to 'off' basically - but I can actually get a warmer tube sound now.
And hopefully, I won't have to deal with any more soundmen telling me to turn down.

And hopefully, I won't have to deal with any more soundmen telling me to turn down. The Airbrake is a great tool, but I'm not sure it can work that miracle.

I bought an Airbrake last week to use with the Stang-Ray. After some experimentation, I've decided I like the way the amp sounds without the Airbrake. With the amp cranked almost all the way up with the Airbrake in the circuit, it still has a pretty clean tone; no noticeable break-up. So, I decided I might as well use the Stang-Ray at a lower volume where it exhibits big, round, clear tones. Haven't tried the Airbrake with any other amp yet. MeZadude

I'm thinking of getting an airbrake but was hoping someone could email me a few pics of the inside. I've got a weber mini mass now but am looking at the dr. z. Anyone have any pics of the inside of this beast? mwood00@sbcglobal.net
