OK, I admit it's a bit geeky and really displays clearly as a manifestation of the addiction, but I'm gonna have my say here and post it all.
For those of you who havent read any of my other ridiculous and boring posts, here's a lil background. I'm lucky (or dysfunctional, you make the call). Over the years I've been able to acquire a few vintage amps, for fun and education and as a retirement program (what else you wanna sink your hard earned cash and credit into?). So my son and I have gotten to experience first hand these legendary amps of yore. However, I recently discovered Z amps (no idea why it took me so long), and my life is radically changed. These Z's are so good sounding that I now question the wisdom of owning these other rigs. Anyway, enough background. On to the meat of the matter, the topic at hand: the Galaxie. An awesome amp!
I've just spent an hour and a half on a little project. A nice Saturday morning fun project to take the edge off a week of work. I've been A-B'ing my new Galaxie with some of my best tweed Fender's from the '50's, and seeing if I can get the Gal to sound just like 'em. And the good news is: I can! The Gal really does do the Tweed Amp Thang. I'm gonna follow this post with 4 other's, showing the twisty dial settings I found to make the Gal sound like a '53 Twin, a '59 Bassman, a'57 Pro amp, and a '58 Deluxe. I played a Telecaster and used a Voodoo Lab amp switcher to go back and forth, and played the Gal through the only 8 ohm speaker cab I have, an old '60's Vox cabinet with 2-12 silver celestions. I also had an Air Brake on the Gal so that I could get about the same volumes coming out of any amp I was comparing to, so I included that setting also as a nice reference as to how loud these amps are, and because I had to crank the volume of the Gal up on some to get the same amount of distortion. Mostly I tried to match the tones on the middle switch of the Tele -both pickups on, as this is probably the most tonally complex, but the other pickups matched up very closely once I found the setting for each amp. If this sounds boring, read no further. O/w, see my next posts.
