Have a Z-28 running into a Z 1x12 8 ohm cab. am looking for a cheap attenuator for recording at home and for some of the small club gigs that I do. thought the Weber Mini-Mass might be the way to go. Thought I read somewhere in Myles' website that the Z-28 kicks out more power than its specced 22W. my question is....would the 25w mini-mass be ok for this amp or would I need the 50w version?

I'd recommend the 50W version; I think I remember Myles saying he benched the amp at producing upwards of 35W at peak.
I've never used one of these, they look pretty cool. I have used a THD on a super reverb with fine results using the Line Out, but they do cost more. I use an Airbrake extensively, but it's not quite the same kind of device as the MASS or the Hotplate.

I use a 50 watt Weber MiniMASS with my Route 66 a lot and it works great. Joe-X uses a MiniMASS as well. I am very happy with it. I'd get the 50 watter for the Z28

i've got a mini mass 25 for the carmen ghia- ted weber advised it and it works great. probably shouldn't say it but i changed the treble bypass cap from 2.2uf to 1uf as it was a little too bright and had slightly odd tone down low on the mini mass volume. the new cap sounds great and lets me really get the tone my greenbacks are capable of.

For me, the Mini Mass sounded like arse. The Airbrake kills it. SO much more transparent. At more than just subtle attenuation, the Mini just sapped the tone. Yuck.
Get the Z brake. Worth every penny.

I've got a 50 watt mini-MASS that I've used for recording with both of my Z amps. I think it works great.....HOWEVER.... Ted himself told me that a lot of people change the cap values in the MASS' because they get muddy at "bedroom" levels... I can say that when I've set the mini-MASS up with my MAZ Jr. at really low levels just for learning parts, etc, it does dull the tone a bit. But usually, I can turn the cut knob up slightly, like from 9 o'clock to 10 o'clock, and it does the trick. If you are using your Z-28 mostly at home and small gigs/rehearsals, then it might be worth it to you to spend the extra $$$ and get the Air Brake. I've heard nothing but great things about how transparent they are. But if you are using the attenuator just to take the edge off in most live situations, you'd probably be fine with the mini-MASS....although I would get the 50 watt version in case you ever get a bigger/different amp.

Hi JChance, I'm curious about the "changing the cap values" thing. Is this pretty easy to do? I've got the 100 watt Weber Mass and I like it but it does muddy up my SRZ-65 - ESPECIALLY w/ my Les Paul (not so bad with the Tele). Let me know if have any ideas.

hi johnny- i have a mini mass and i halved the value of the capacitor- i forget what the actual value of the thing was- ted weber said i had actually done the opposite of what others had done i had found the tone to be a bit shrill turned down with humbuckers the capacitor is there to let more treble through at lower volume a bit like a loudness switch on a stereo- treble and bass boost becasue ther ear misses these down low also a bit like a fender bright switch most people doble it to make it brighter down low but i was hearing wierd sounds- much better this way
