Eric played it WFO on stage & made it cry. I got to play it on a cpl tunes, & it was incredibly responsive. I really think the blue/gold is way to go w/this one. I was running a '57 historic goldtop straight in, an was blown away at the different voicings I could get w/just the guitar vol knob. I HAVE to get one.

I'll second Tony's account that Roscoe was killing it at the jam. I only got to play the 'Wreck at about 1/2 - 3/4 volume at the shop with my Adder/Voodoo loaded Tele and the tone has been haunting me ever since ;D The blue and gold combo really seems to bring out the magic in this amp.

So that means it's about a thirty watt amp then?

English John made it sound like the ultimate SRV amp. It was amazing to see this amp morph into what the player wanted it to do.

I can hear lots of the roots influences in John's playing... Albert King and Albert Collins I know I heard the other day and I thot I heard some Johnny Copeland pull offs too at the VFW amongst a wide variety the other usual suspects. John is the real deal ...and at Brother's Lounge, once Don moved that empty Fender case off the front of the stage, John was feeling it hung 10 off it. High Class Talent all wrapped up into one of the nicest people.

"SRV"-like tone is in the hands and heart. I've heard great SRV-like sounds from great players on MAZ 18's, 38's, KT-45's, Matchless...everything. EL84's, 34's, KT66's.......

This is the kind of overdrive tone i've been looking for. It's smooth but can still have bite if you want it too, plus it's percussive and LOUD! It's the best sounding amp i've ever played. It's all i've been able to think about since playing it.

I'll jump in and say that it just felt very, very good under the fingers. I had Frankie's Strat and it sounded nothing like when he or John played it. It sounded, for better or worse, like me.
But for me it was really all about the feel of the amp. I didn't even get to try the low voltage setting, and it still felt great!
I think using the term complex would be an understatement. There was just sooo much cool swilry overtones...Hard to describe really.

Question?
Did anyone plug any OD pedals in? How did it respond? I lnow the amp is all about the straight in tone, but...Does it like pedals? Being a "voxy" front end would suggest it might be picky.

Eric played it WFO on stage...... I felt it was my duty to do so **** also I did kick in one of Jason's pedals (a black & red one with a sort of viking head on it?) a few times and it got even crazier (which for me is a most desired effect).

I absolutely loved it with my Esquire. I had the Volume at 1 o'clock, the Cut at about 9, Bass about noon, treble about 10:30. Very nice feel indeed. The real deal.

I used my Timmy overdrive at Brother's. and a little delay...It works great with pedals. In all honesty. you can't make this amp sound bad. ;D

You think it will make a nice pair with my Stangray?

Anyone know the wattage? What type of power tubes and rectifier? I have no idea, really But with four EL84s...I'd say 35 to 40 watts, similar to a Stangray, perhaps? However, Reinhardt just built a 'Rocket-type' amp for Mark Knopfler (the Talyn) that has 4 EL84s, 3 12AX7s and a GZ34 rectifier...so I suspect the tubes are similar in the Z-Wreck. Docs spin on a 'Rocket-type' amp may have a different rectifier...I'm not sure. However, I suspect it's the same same the Stangray in a GZ34/5AR4. Keith

You think it will make a nice pair with my Stangray? I haven't heard it live...but I suspect it would be in the same camp as the Stangray, tone-wise. I'm sure it's different, but the same For me, I expect that the purchase of the Z-Wreck will replace my desire for a Stangray. I see the Z-Wreck as a 'souped- up Stangray'. Keith

I hereby ban myself from this thread. If anyone catches me snooping around in any "Trainwreck" thread, you have permission to intervene and send me to rehab. I'm gonna need to win lotto to catch up on all the amps I want.

How was the clean tone and headroom? Does it get dirtier than the Stang Ray?

when i got to try it out on thursday morning, i was really shocked at how it sounded, i didn't expect it to sound the way it did, it had the most amazing clean, clear 3d sound when set low and it just cranked with absolutely no muddiness or fizz when played loud, you know what i mean?
The doc asked me how it sounded in comparision to some of the AC30s i had tried but true to the story i'd never tried one that sounded good AND worked! I think if i had heard a VOX that sounded that good in my teens i don't think i would've used anything else.
It truly is a unique amp, you owe it to yourself that even if you'll never ever be able to afford it or even have the needs for something that power - to try it out at a store, it really is an experience to play.
I tested it with the shops stock Eric Johnson strat which we know is a cool guitar. True as the Doc and Ken intended - the guitar really cleaned up fantastically well throughout the whole range of the pot without any loss in top end and the EJ strat doesn't even have one of the bright caps on the volume tag. You really are inclined to use every spot on the tone controls of your guitar too.
As mentioned above, i do tend to sound like SRV on occasion ;-) but with this amp and that guitar on the back pickup it sounded like i was plugging into the holy grail with THE best drive unit on the planet imbetween the two! The twang side of me came out with some ripping pinched harmonics.

No John...I guess impersonator was the wrong choice of words...now if you had the black hat with feathers and all that, maybe impersonator would fit Around here they call them SRV wannabes ! haha.. I would just say you are a good guitarist that has a Stevie vibe, and does it well. I also think it's awesome you come all the way from the UK for Zfest...heck I'd want to play at least 3-4 times too ! I guess I'm spoiled, takes me about 8 minutes to get the shop. Do you guys get away with playing that loud at little clubs in England? Mannnn...I really had to juice that Wreck to keep up ! But it's all good ! Keep up the good work !

3 times actually! Ha ha Impersonator? Is that a compliment?! Ha ha Okay, I'm hearing some grumblings here, so let me clear this up. A few days prior to Zfest, I got a call from Maple Heights asking me to organize who would be playing at Brothers. Well, not so much who, but when and in what order. I will tell you that it was a difficult task figuring out who to match up. I'm happy to say that everyone who wanted to perform, did get up and play on Saturday. And yes. John did play 3 times, at my request. There were 3 rigs on stage, and I tried to match people up the best I could. I asked John to go up and play with certain people, even though John told me he'd already played. So, to English John, thank you for helping me out on Saturday. Now, let's get back to what this thread was really started about - the ZWreck.

Doc said John Fogerty heard BP's ZWreck and then called Doc and ordered one ..... and after receiving it, he ordered another one. Can't wait to hear any sound samples, even the ones recorded on vid cams at Z Fest. Speakin' of which, when will the vids (and pics) be posted? Sorry to be so impatient. kc
