Does anyone know why the z-verb is not true bypass? Perhaps true bypass is hype...

The Z-Verb is not true bypass; nor are the Fender 6G15 reverb units. It would be a lot harder to implement a true bypass in a circuit like this. There is a slight tone change when going through a reverb tank like this; it makes the guitar a little warmer and fatter, which a lot of people say is a good thing Without going into the whole true bypass vs. buffer issue, I'll just say that true bypass isn't "hype", but the alternative of a pedal that loads down your signal and robs your tone of all its high end is definitely not preferable. When running true bypass effects you just have to remember that every cable and effect you add to the chain still adds resistance and capacitance which will still degrade your signal with every addition. Therefore, it's still a good idea to use a low impedance buffer in your chain even with true bypass effects.
