Greetings all... my first post here. After years of gigging my 1980 Boogie Mark 2, I decided that the extreme weight and extreme volume were more than I wanted to deal with. At 100 watts and nearly 100 pounds, it is a major pain to deal with. Took the amp down to the local high-end music shop to put it on consignment.
I got a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe last week, and I liked the sound of it but had some concerns with the overall level of quality. I have little tolerance for gear that isn't rugged. However, from my experience with that amp I figured that a pair of 6L6's was pretty ideal for me from both a power and tone standpoint. My band runs the range between Motown/Stax and classic rock, and I need both a good chunky clean tone and a good crunchy rock tone.
Got to the local store, they had a Galaxie and Z Best pair there on consignment. I noticed that it was a pair of 6L6's, and liked the look of the set. When I plugged it in, I fell in love within 2 minutes- literally. Short story, I walked out with the pair 1/2 hour later.
I've had the amp at home for 24 hours, and I'm more amazed the more I play. Between my Strat and my Les Paul, I can get any sound I want out of it with a few tweaks of the knobs. The overall layout is so simple and so elegant, but the range of tones is amazing. The clean channel with the Strat volume at about 7 gets me perfect for some Steve Cropper, and the LP on channel 2 literally breathes fire. It is the greatest hot classic rock tone I've ever heard.
No problems or questions, just wanted to gloat about my first Z. What a great amp!
