K... so I established it was a preamp tube issue w/ my Galaxie... Now on to something else. I want cleaner headroom on Channel 1, and maybe to make Channel 2 not quite as dirty. Which tubes should I throw in there? Is this all in the preamp? Or should I change the power tubes as well? Sorry... I'm pretty uneducated about what types of difference certain types of tubes can make...

I'd start with the preamp for sure. Pretty simple, start by putting a 5751 in the first preamp slot instead of a 12ax7. I personally would buy a NOS one- try kcanostubes.com. I'm not affiliated with them at all, just a satisfied customer. If that doesn't tame it enough for you, you could try another 5751 in the phase inverter that'll help too. Just make sure if you swap out the phase inverter, you get one with balanced triodes. Most websites give you the option for balanced triodes. I hope that helps. I'm pretty sure just swapping out V1 will make a big enough difference for you. Good luck.

Awesome! Thanks mitch for the response...
How much will it actually impact the overall tone though? I don't want to squash anything out; just to tame it.

It shouldn't affect the tone other than taking some of the bite off of it. The dynamics and depth will still be there, it will just break up later.

I am on the verge of swapping my MAZSR for a galaxie. how did the tube swap turn out? I am a bit afraid of the gain channel (too much too soon) and would like to tame it down without spending the $$ on the MV mod. thanks

Once you get use to the gain channel, it's not to much. Picking dynamics come in to play and I love it.

I know this goes against the normal recommendations to experiment with V1 for maximum impact, but I put a NOS 12at7 in the phase inverter and LOVE it. Definitely have more clean headroom now, and when driven beyond I like the character of the breakup better. It still breathes fire on the dirty channel, but remains very musical.

I have experimented with my Galaxie quite a bit, and have a suggestion for your question. The 5751 in the V1 is a really good idea, however finding a good 5751 is not easy. NOS or old GE 5751 are a little erratic, RCA's are expensive. I now have a EH 5751 gold in it. I actually prefer this: JJ ECC 803S in the V1, and a JJ ECC 81 (balanced) in the phase inverter (V3). I would never recommend any ECC 81 for this application but a JJ. This combination gave the amp balls and a round tone, and dropped the agressiveness in the gain. The only caution is that if you have a combo amp the ECC 803s may go microphonic as it is a long plate.

I like a 12AY7 in V1. Like the tweed Super this amp is based on.

12AY7 I'll have to try that.

What are you playing with the Galaxie? You may appreciate the tone of cooler pickups more than cooler tubes. Or better pots. Stock pots and caps in most guitars these days are tone sucking, cheap junk. Mind, not that there is anything wrong with good, NOS tubes. But consider the whole tone circuit, not just the amp. With good components on the guitar side, turn the amp up and the guitar down. If I had it all to do over again, I would have bought my Galaxie just for channel one and not for a moment would I miss channel two. No doubt, channel two is okay fine and then some. But channel one is easily worth the price of the amp to me all by its lonesome. Check out the sticky on rectifiers in the tubes section. drzamplifiers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tubes&action=display&thread=6263
