I've had an AB a while now, but I haven't always liked it. Long story short, at first I liked it, then didn't, and now I thinks its great again... I'm know, sounds totally neurotic!
The first time I liked it was because of the honey moon state when I'd just gotten the Ghia followed by an Alico TT and AB. I was like a giddy school girl!
Soon after that I had an incident with my amp due to a bad speaker cable while using the AB. It took me a while to sus out the two bad resistors, after the amp got fixed I was irrationally afraid to use it (edit: the AB). And when I did finally did plug it in, it didn't sound right to me, now in hindsight I understand the reasons.
So a week ago, since I'm moving back to Bombay, packing and clearing things out, dusted the AB off and gave it another whir. I was amazed with what I heard, fact is by now I'd gotten to know the ghia much better, an my expectations were realistic thanks to the time with my band. When I wasn't that impressed, I was expecting sounds the ghia just didn't do straight in. Now I know what to expect and that the AB is quite spot on.
Also I realized the AB is a great alternative way to check out an amp at it's more extreme settings while reducing the speaker significance.
Having realized this I'll probably still prefer just running the Ghia without it as it's just not the kind of amp where you get a lot of gain with a strat going straight in, maybe with hotter pups the AB will make more sense. At boiling point via the AB my TT Alnico gets boomy, I'm putting that down due to the type of closed cab it's in, front ported HIFI (abomination I know....), hopefully that will change with an Avatar 1x12 wide.
Moral of the story is I got a lot to learn...
