Your Z-28 head is the "twin" to my Ghia:

You folks are killing me softly with your full-on z-28 love. I've been in contemplation of the Z-28 for what, a year? In fact, I think Myles made the recommendation way back then, when I was all set for amps. It's all his fault I've been catching myself re-re-rereading his Z pages many times lately. It's amazing how time either changes things or totally crystallizes them. Back then it was "yeah, that's a great design and I can see the value of having that, but what I've got is more than adequate blah blah blah." Now it's almost desparate. In fact, I must have been trying to fill the Z void with pedals and guitars...silly me, I should just listen to the experts. If I've learned anything, it's gotta be "if you're on the fence, jump off of it and into the deep end as soon as possible." Thanks for the porn! I'll do whatever I can to repay the favor.

Terryg...hang in there...all I can say is I have no regrets, after my first Z they are all I have played. I went through a couple finding my tone..if I had the $$ I would have kept them all. I had a Maz Jr NR and a Route 66 that I have sold. Both great amps but I settled on keeping the Ghia, It is that good, them missing the 66 but wanting to try a 28 I bought that a few weeks back and I am very happy.
Zane, Thanks for your help. It's too funny. For a while I had my blond Ghia on the black cab..just the oposite of you rig !! I am on the hunt for an old style blond oxblood 1X12 to match my Ghia so I can have two matching rigs.

All right! I've never done this, so please bear with me. With any luck, you should be seeing an image of my Z28 sitting on top of my 2x10 cab! This was snapped straight out the box; can you dig the "new amp smell?" Terry

Volume at 4 o'clock, everything else dimed...that should work ;D Congrats, great looking rig!

Oops, yeah, that's pretty impressive, huh? It came outta the box that way, I admit. I did the Big No-No and played the amp on a paying gig on Saturday, without rehearsal or anything. Kinda weird, outdoors at a block party in the middle of a field or something. I used a Heritage 335 ("blues special", think 1" narrower 335 and you got it), which is currently loaded with some hot Duncans, and I gotta say the amp just kicked butt. I was able to drive it easily, but I know I have to spend some legitimate time with it to dial it in. I'm really looking forward to that honeymoon. Here's a pic "on the job" (now that I've got the hang of this ). The airbrake never went past "2," as I recall. Thanks for the compliments. The good Dr. recommended the combination, actually. I believe It's the same grille that the Mini-Z uses.

Just remember the EQ also controls gain. Your gig shot shows the bass back at 10 o'clock. Doesn't take long to figure it out...a very common gig setting for the 28 is volume 2-3 oclock, bass at 1 oclock, treble 3 oclock. It'll give it up pretty good once your guitar volume rolls up.

Ah yes of course, thanks....I totally know what you're saying. I had an extensive test drive of the Z28, with a lot of advice from Myles, on that very topic. I was also definitely twiddling knobs through the course of the night that night, just to see how it would go. I suspect being outside didn't really let me hear it accurately. The way the tone controls work in this amp was a huge selling point to me. My 6545 is similar, in fact, in the 45-side of things. I *really* like the way this Z28 breaks up, it's kind of a new feel or sound for me. I've been playing an EL84-based Victorilux for a long time (which I love), so this is a great alternative for me.
I'm already nourishing a Ghia desire, too. Will it ever end?

I know Myles refers to the combination as the ultimate channel switcher or something, right? You're so right that once the 'infection' occurs it's not cured until the proper dose of antibiotic is acquired....and this looks like it'll come in the shape of an 18 lb box.
Madison, I'm working around those settings you mention, in fact. I've rolled back a bit since the guitar I'm currently working with has a lot of output. When I get my single coil guitars going that's exactly where I'll start.
Thanks for the kind words, everyone! Terry

My relationship with my Z 28 is fairly young as well, but I'm liking both tones dimed and workin' the guit knobs a lot..maybe because I've been crankin' through the Ghia for awhile...or my tube set up..but I dig my z -28 Tele+Keeley Blues Driver+Tele (s) = HAPPY ;D Well...and that Mini that due Thursday..can't wait to wail on that 'till the wife yells !! LOL Glad ya got yours she's sure sweet in Blond

Everything looks good in this picture - even the couch! How's that Hamer? - it looks beautiful. And, with the 4x10 are you able to cop Bassman "inflections" if you wanted to?
Evidently we all like blondes in some form or another.

Terry You are in a few places on my "Z amp player's page" as are some of these other folks .... www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/doctorzplayers.htmlI actually added your latest at the bottom of that page yesterday. These are not Z amps but it was a picture I took a few days ago (with my typical lack of photo skills). It does show what my wife has to put up with at times. This is the entry way to our house..... ............. and Terry has seen this (and this is where he played a Z-28 actually). This was a wet bar. The fridge below was removed to add amp space: Note .... the lowest picture is the most current config and how it was set up when Terry was out from Chicago. The Fargen amp in the fridge spot was being set up for a project and may have been gone when Terry was over, I don't remember. There is a tweed bassman in there now but the Z 2x10 cab will be back in that slot soon. I use the Z 2-10 cab a lot with customer's amps when they are being blueprinted.

That's the Z28 that sealed the deal for me, yep. I kept going back to it, and I kept saying "now, what if I want this, or this, or this" you were more than gracious in accomodating my hacking on it.
The Fargen was in the TV room in the corner - I fondly remember the can of Stewie's Mind Erasing Elixer - and a GT Solo Single was in the fridge area.
What a great time!

Terry, The 4x10 cab definitely gets you into Bassman territory as described by Dr Z. The cabinet and amp have a huge bottom and with a Fulltone OCD the rig can be very Marshall like as well. It is loud with the 4 10's. According to Dr Z it is 3db louder with 4 as opposed to 2. That's like going from a 25 watt amp to a 50. As for the Hamer, it is an incredibly beautiful instrument. The color in the picture doesn't do it justice. It is also a great sounding guitar. The buckers are from the Duncan custom shop hand wound and serialized by Seymour. The guitar is monster cable wired and the overall effect is more bell like as in single coils but still has all the other humbucker character. Unbelievable workmanship and a great match for the Z which you know all about! ArnieZ

Okay..I just bought a Z 1x12 cab, the new, wider version. The Z emblem was off of it, so looking at these pics I see that the emblem is offset towards the top of the cab, at least on the 2x10's. I was going to refasten the emblem, but is the placement the same on the 1x12's?

Z-28 with a 4x10 cab .... If you want to make some folks cry have them A/B your rig with a $8000 Tweed Bassman. What you find is pretty eye opening! Happy playing!!!!

I am really sorry we could not hang out more. I found out the same day you were going to spend the weekend that I had the Brad and Sara shows on Saturday and Sunday. Next time .... if there are no shows my time is 100% yours and if there are shows you can come work them with me. Myles
