For you serious tone freaks, you might want to get your studio headphones out for this one ! This is by far the most natural sounding attenuator to date !

Mannnnn.....I played two great vintage Vibro-Verbs for years...and twin's witha single 15. I use a 15 now with my Maz 38 and EZG and it is just a big fat juicy awsome sound !!!!! Especially in a power trio, when you want a full sound !!!!

No doubt, the Airbrake sounds almost invisible on all but the highest amounts of attenuation. However, this rule seems to only truly apply to amps with settings that have a fair amount of gain. On my 100 watt Marshall, set clean with slightest bit of hair (no master volume) the Airbrake did not keep the tone as true as the attenuation was increased. I detected added distortion...I would love to see this video test done again with a 100-watt cleanish amp to make sure others had the same results. Even so, the Airbrake is a great, great product!

Great demonstration Frankie! Loved it! I especially loved it because the demo I did way back in 2007 got a lot of grief about how it only showed the transparency because I used all clean settings and had no high gain test. I guess your demo takes care of that question very nicely. That amp sounds great!

Thanks, I didn't see those clips. Good to hear it both clean and dirty ! I use the 50w and less amps with the brake-lite, it comes in handy. Really nice to have the control you need to do the job right.

Frankie, just wondering, do you have a preference for the Airbrake or the Brake Lite with your Maz? I'm asking as a new Maz 38 head owner, having also bought a Brake Lite. To my ears it does a very good job, but I keep it on top of the amp, which it's not really designed for. I'm thinking I may get an Airbrake and relegate the Brake Lite to use with my Deluxe Reverb.

They pretty much do the same thing, except for the bedroom settings.....The Airbrake would be cool, especially if you want to run it with different amps. And if your wanting to play real quiet at home or in an apartment or something, I'd go with the Air Brake.

Thanks, I don't really need the bedroom setting as this is for gigging, but I think I'll get myself an Airbrake for the versatility, as you suggest.
Those videos of yours are great, watched 'em all before becoming a Z owner, really helpful!

The clean clips are great, but I don't believe they are of a 100-watt amp- I have no issues with the incredible attenuation of, say, a 30 watt amp set clean with an Air Brake. This works like gangbusters! However, I have yet to hear an Air Brake (or any attenuator) work at extreme settings (on the AB that means MAX bedroom) on a 100 watt or greater amp and have it not alter the tone/add distortion.
Sorry for any confusion and I am not knocking the Air Brake or Brake Lite, both of which rock.
I just wanted to clarify that for those of us who still play giant amps (like my 100 watt Marshall) the Air Brake or any attenuator may not quite keep perfect tones at every setting. Most amps with the Z attenuators simply rule though!

But I hope you read some of the dialog there, especially the bits about human hearing and the Fletcher-Munson curve. It's all relevant...

your right....part of the sound is the element of pushing the speakers, speaker break-up.....moving air, and acoustically filling a room. So when it's that soft, it can change the sound. But I never heard any "distortion" of any kind on any settings in my demos, or stage use. The only thing I notice is it can take just a little presence/high-end off. And sometimes it's for the better....That's part of the reason amps sound so cool cranked up, they get real smooth and creamy ! I highly recommend the Air-Brake or Brake-Lite if your looking at one.....and the price is very resonable....

With zero differencew beetween 1 - 4 I would think your mic / recording system is putting a limiter on the sound. though, I do have an AB and unless the amp it cranked to full you do not hear much of a volume difference between 2 - 4.

There is no limiting on this recording....but I think Youtube does limit and or compress the sound some. I noticed the same thing....it could be that the Marshall was just so darn loud...I really had fun playing that amp ! Reminded me of 70's stadium rock ! haha
