Hey Frank, I recently pulled the Tung-Sol pre's (I had a bad experience previously w/another amp and MANY bad Tung- Sol pre's) and now have a CV-4004 = V1 and TESLA + V3. It almost feels too loose w/ humbuckers now. I'm swap V1 w/ V3 and see what that yields. The tung-sols were stock V1&3 and NOS 12AT7's in V2&4 I think. My power tubes look to be of the new American Groove tubes. I could be wrong. I hear tell of groove tubes actually making tubes (only 6L6's for now) state side! Hope this helps, Ttt.

Hey Frank, I did get to try a pair of TAD Short Bottle Tubes. They are medium rated and are about 1 1/2 years old. I didn't bias the EZG with these tubes I just wanted to hear it for a few minutes.
The tubes that came in my EZG are #4 rated Groove Tubes. They sound pretty good.
The TAD tubes have this high end thing that I really like. It's not brightness, it's just sweetness if you will. It kinda has this percussive attack that I really like. I'm gonna order a set of TAD tubes right now as a matter of fact for the EZG.
I've been using TAD tubes in my Twin for a while, and they sound really good.
I also tried a JJ ECC 83 in V1. It sounds pretty good as well. Doesn't seem to have the fullness (bottom) of the Tung-sol that came in it. The JJ tube is pretty old. It's just one I've had in my stock pile for a while.
I'm gonna order some more 12AX7's as well to try. I'll update my findings.

I've actually got a couple of Sovtek KT66s as well as a 5U4 in place of the rectifier tube. The amp tech I go to re-biased it of course but I can't remember where he set it to.
The amp is a beast if you get it past noon with both dials, although this is quite loud. I absolutely LOVE how it sounds. I highly recommend this set up. The 5U4 makes the most noticeable difference if you want it to distort more. The dirt you can get out of the amp is soooooo nice.
Have fun

Not sure about you having the Tung-sol in V1. You can try the 5751. It will be a little less gain but they do sound good. You can easily try preamp tubes without having to re-bias or anything other than physically changing the tube. You're right about the EZG having plenty of bottom end. It's a great amp. You just have to try some different things and combinations to get it where you want it. It's been my experience that tubes in the same class (such as EL84's, 6V6's, 6L6's ect) don't really change the amp all that much. Maybe 10-15%. What I like about tubes is the fact that you can somewhat control what point the power section of the amp starts to break up. I actually ordered my tubes to stay a little cleaner. I play mostly new country, but I like Brent Mason's tone from the mid 90's. What kind of music do you play?

all right, i will try changing the preamp tubes for sure! but right now i'm on the road for 3 weeks... so i won't be able to do it until begin of april...
i play mostly pop-rock music, although i love country!! but it's not very famous over here, sad but true... when i'm playing for myself i do a lot of blues stuff as well, but mostly it's really modern mainstream pop and rock music. i hope the guys around here don't shake their heads now... :-) i wanted to have the perfect clean sound for the basis, the rest i do with pedals! i have about 6 different overdrive pedals in front so i have good variety of dirty tones, works perfectly, but the EZG has a bit to much bass for me. i already posted the in another thread (EZG, too much bass?) and got quite a few good answers! i also have the wampler brent mason overdrive pedal, i love brent mason! it's one of the best pedals i have ever stepped on!
have a good sunday, frank

I don't see an answer to the OP's request for a tube chart. Is there one available elsewhere on this forum or in another location?
And while we're waiting on that, which preamp tube is V1 (e.g., is it the preamp tube to the far right as you're facing the rear of the amp?)?
Finally, I'm considering a 12AY7 in V1 for added headroom with 'buckers. Anyone already try this? If yes, what did you think of the swap? If not, perhaps I'll try it and post about it.

I had recently had my rectifier tube fail on me. I took it to my amp tech and he ended up replacing the rectifier and both 6L6's with JJ's. He also replaced the send and return tubes for the reverb which had gone microphonic. He also rebiased it quite a bit hotter than it was. The difference is stunning. It killed at rehearsal this week. I couldn't be happier.
