Would there be a way to get more clean headroom from her? I like the crunch but could use just a bit more headroom. She also is a bit noisy there is a slight hum and hiss when turned past 9. It's not obnoxious but noticeable in recordings. The EL84s are newer so don't think it's the tubes. Do the Mazeratis run loud? Thanks As far as the hum goes, pull the PI tube and see if you still have it. If yes, it's power tubes. If no, it's preamp tubes.

The bottom end is there and then some I'm afraid the house will shake loose from the foundation I might just take her in I have some great amp techs around here. I could ask the wife for a new EZG-50 or KT-45. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it.

That little tidbit should be a sticky somewhere...I never thought to try that in troubleshooting noise!

PI is the Phase Invertor. The 5751 is what comes in that amp stock and is right beside the power tubes.

Could I replace the two 5751s with two 12ax7s?

Could I replace the two 5751s with two 12ax7s? There should be only 1 5751 in the PI. You can have 2 12AX7's. It will reduce the headroom and I think someone told me, would reduce the life of the power tubes.

It will reduce the headroom and I think someone told me, would reduce the life of the power tubes. Don't want that. I changed out the old 5751 with a 12ax7LP and it worked and there is more clean headroom...crazy. I'm going to get a replacement 5751 tomorrow. UPDATE: I changed three tubes, I put in a new EH 12ax7 and a JJ ECC81 in place of the 5751. I also replaced the 5AR4 with a JJ GZ34 with fantastic results no low hum and the amp has a stellar amount of headroom. The overall volume is there with quicker attack and sustain. It made an already great amp better. ;D
