This is an email I received from Carl on 4/4/06
Myles, The thing I realized yesterday while playing and tweaking my rig in the garage is that the SRZ-65 is giving me more saturation without sacrificing any of the clarity or articulation, especially in the bottom end. It's what I've tried to achieve with the Marshalls for years, but never could. It's also faster so the feel is one of effortless playability. I might need a second one just to have a backup, although I think this thing is built like a tank ! CV

Thanks SRZ Sixty Five, you've saved the day once again.

I ve had many of thought of.sellimg mine but it is a piece of art and.built by one of the best amp makers ever:)) MZ!! The DR himself. I get alot of compliments on my tone . My SRZ would be the 1 amp.I. would keep or have to have if. I had to sell them all. from texas blues tone to hard driving rock . The SRZ covers alot of ground. Carl V is a monster player . I wish i had a tenth of his talent. His comment says alot about the SRZ.

For many years I owned a '72 Super Lead, but I'll say it again, I don't think the SL's best day could hold a candle to the SRZ's feel.

Hey Myles - what was it that you did to his amp to give him the sound he has? I'd have to go back and look at the tubes I used and what was written on the tubes. The JJ EL34 output tubes are biased at 38mA, I recall that much. Preamp tubes were changed, long plates in all positions but each 12AX7 is different, no two are the same. The phase inverter was chosen for balance on the curve tracer but I also wanted at least 1.2mA of plate current and a fast rise time as Carl is a very articulate player and he does not like "turbo lag" in his amps. As a side note, Brad Paisley thinks the same way and also has a phase inverter collection to swap in an out of amps depending on mood and venue. On V1 and V2 we are at about 92-95% gain (typical production tubes are 80-85%) I do not recall they tube types, they were picked in the usual manner where I swap things in and out and Carl likes A more than B or the other way around. A process of elimination. Here is a photo from the past showing the procedure on his 1964 Twin Reverb. Carl's USA SRZ has a solid state rectifier. His Europe SRZ-65 (which stays in Europe as he tours there a lot) uses KT77s and either a GZ34/5AR4 or SS rectifier. If I can remember to look when his tour is done I can make a note of what I have in the amp now and post it.

P.S. Over in the Lounge section I posted this same link but also a few views from the past which some may have seen me post here before. This is a shot from 2006 when Carl first played an SRZ-65. We A/B'd it with his plexi 50 watt Marshall. www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/images/Carl_031006_005.jpgWe were lucky enough to end the test before 1pm PST and I was able to have Carl talk to the Doc at the factory before they went home. A short time down the road Carl replaced the 50 watt Marshall with the SRZ-65 and since 2006 it has been the foundation of his rig in the USA and in Europe. As Carl's requirements changed over the last six years we have changed tubes for tonal reasons, changed bias points and changed amp settings but the amps remain just as they came from the factory. There have been no failures in spite of a very active tour and studio schedule. This amp is used continually.

Thanks for the information Myles! I will be much appreciated! p.s. - your old 88 still sounds great! Side note... if you ever want more clean headroom in that 120+ watter (regardless of the "88" name) just let me know. There is a very simple and inexpensive mod that will make it more of a gigantic KT-45, sort of like two of them But ... to get the Delta's great rock grind at rational levels will be pretty hard as then you will have to crank it up higher.
