When I had mine, I ran my cut at 12:00 or 1:00 without an attenuator and about 2:00-3:00 with an attenuator (the attenuator really killed my top end) and my tone right about 2:00-3:00 and the volume just about 10:00 for that edge of breakup tone. I really had it thumping with low end, but it sounded GREAT, clean.
Looking back, I think some of my problems with overdrive pedals was the fact that I had the tone too high which scooped the mids too much. If you're having trouble with overdrives, try decreasing your tone some and try that? Just some FYI

I took my new Ray out last night on its first gig. After seeing the settings in these posts I tried several and got very nice tones. But You guys must be mic'ing your amps? We played a pretty large club and I had to crank the Ray to 100% to be heard. This is not a new problem for me. 30 watt combos never seem to have enough headroom. I normally run a 100w into a 4-12 cab but the Ray sounds so good I want to gig with it. Anyway my settings for last night. VOL 100% CUT on 8 TONE on 2 The bass gets out of control when the amp is turned up! While I did not get the twangy country sound I wanted I did get compliments on am awesome blues tone Two guys actually walked up and wanted to shake my hand they liked it so much. Never had that happen before, maybe I should go join a blues band ha. I am running into a 2x12 with celestion golds. I might go to a 1x12 if I need to mic but I hate to mic as I usually can't hear myself over the vocals in the monitor.

Les Paul Hi Imput Volume at #6 Tone around noon Cut off Z Best THAT is what the Ray does best! Curt. I've been rediscovering the ray with these settings in mind. The cut control is a powerful knob, but turn it all the way off and you end up with a different sounding amp to play with. There are some nice settings using just the volume and tone knobs.

I just read deepsouths post. Wow 2x12 golds and having a hard time being heard??? I would suggest a different preamp tube in V2 . Mic the cab and.mix aome guitar signal in the monitor mix and or turn some of the vocals down. Its good to hear you dont have enough volume. But with any gigs i play i never get the volume more the 1/2 way up:((

Since someone just "Liked" my reply from 2011... I'm going to elaborate a little more, since I've had 2 StangRays since then, and currently have a Stingray. Cut around 9:00 or slightly lower, depending on the guitar Tone around 10:00.....sometimes a little higher, sometimes a little lower... Kinda depends on the room/stage. This works really well with pedals! I tried my previous settings (2011 post) and it sounded like crap with overdrive pedals

Thanks for posting your settings. I liked your old thread. I'm getting a Stangray in the next few weeks, and am getting some ideas for when she arrives.
I'm mostly playing Les Pauls with buckers these days. I know the 'Ray sounds great with Tele's and Strat's, but I'm anxious to run my LP's through it. Will probably run it through my 1x12 with a Creamback - at least for now. Maybe get another cab with a Gold later.

Regardless of the position of tone and cut, that Volume has to be AT LEAST at 9:30/10:00. More is betterer! That's where the Ray starts to come to life, IMO

Redzsrock, welcome to the Sting/Stangray amp. It's one of my fav amps. I set my controls very similar to Telejas's settings and Greg is right on the money regarding volume. The volume sweet spot for me is 10:00-1:00 depending on single coil or humbuckers. For humbuckers I used a PRS DGT playing Top 40 music. I use inefficient speakers which allows me to run the volume a bit higher.

I tried my previous settings (2011 post) and it sounded like crap with overdrive pedals Hi there, I just got my first Stang Ray after many years of owning a MAZ 18 reverb. I love this amp so much, but am unable to crank the volume past 9:00 at home. That doesn’t matter much though because even barely on, the amp sounds absolutely stunning. When I was able to play with our band turned up, it was amazing. I’m a bit confused though on what the tone knob is doing. Can you tell me what the tone control does? I’ve never owned a ghia (which is what Dr Z says the Ray’s tone knob is) so I’m not sure how it is supposed to work. From what I can tell, turning the tone knob clockwise adds a lot of bass. But is there a way to add mids other than using a pedal? Or is the tone knob adding bass AND mids and you use the cut knob to balance out by adding treble? I find myself with the cut below 9:00 and the tone at noon or so, otherwise it is just crazy bright (with the band it was awesome, but at home it’s a bit much after a while) PS sorry for the zombie post, but felt it was relevant and might help others in the same boat.

Yeah, the Ray sounds GREAT at low and high volumes...One of the few amps that does that!
The Tone knob does add low end the more clock-wise you turn it, but just like on an AC30 when you turn the treble and/or bass up, it takes away the mids as well (or covers them up more).
To keep some mids in there, you should probably run the tone below noon.... I kept mine around 10:00, any higher seemed too scooped and my OD pedals didn't sound as good.
Congrats on the GREAT amp!

Hey, I really appreciate this. It is my favorite amp. I didn’t understand what people meant when they said an amp was 3D until I got this amp. What a sound! I took Drew’s advice and put a weber 50 watt alnico blue dog in my 1x12 and it is really amazing even with the volume low. While my maz 18 was with Don getting upgraded, I asked about a half power switch for the Ray. $199. I’m giving it some serious thought. Have you or anyone else on here done this? My only trepidation is the shipping (comes in at more like $400 after shipping back and forth). I guess the other trepidation is power tubes wearing unevenly.

I had great luck using a Brake-Lite attenuator.

I had great luck using a Brake-Lite attenuator. Yes me too. Really great tool. I also use the Suhr reactive load IR for recording, practicing and gigging with the brake lite after it to control speaker volume. I should probably just leave the Ray alone and use what I’ve got. These forums are so helpful for perspective on this stuff. Thanks for the help with the tone knob explanation.
