Just curious how everyone is running their ray. So post your settings and please put what kind of music you use the settings for country, blues, rock, etc. Also put if you are using the airbrake and how many clicks. Or just post a picture. haha. I love the Ray with the Blues it is tonal heaven! Thanks Edwin

Most of the time I'm playing with the cut knob at about 1:30 and the tone from noon to 1:30. Volume at 9:00 when I'm playing at home and at least noon when jamming.

Cut: around 2:00 Tone: Around 11:00-11:30 Vol: to suit circumstances Air Brake: ditto - that usually means 1 click for just a hair quieter, 2 clicks for quieter with more grit, 3 clicks for much quieter and a lot of natural grit and no need for an overdrive
Those are pretty much the settings I use for all applications, but it works especially well for punkish power-pop - the sound of a Ric through an AC30.

How do you guys handle the cut past noon! OUCH!
Cut for me is 10:00 with a dark guitar (P-90s). Tele and Strat go 9:00 on the Cut.
Just jamming, I'll run the tone up to 2:00 to get the thump on bottom.
When playing with others, I drop the Tone down to 11:00 or so to make the mids more interesting.
I love the midrange tonality when the tone hits about 10:00. Too bad the bottom falls out with it. I don't much need all that bass anyhow with Blues.

If I'm running the tone control below 12:00 I won't use as much of the cut knob. I like how the 2 knobs interact with each other.

Volume: about 2:00 Tone: about 11:00 to noon Cut: about 9:00
But I use these settings with my tele, and it's loaded with a Duncan Vintage Broadcaster...a very bright pickup. If I use my other tele, with a Duncan 5/2...I raise the cut just a bit.
I airbrake to whatever the venue calls for.
I too don't see how you guys can handle the cut above noon.

I need to get a Ray just to see what this cut nob is doing and how bright these settings are.

Between 9:00 and 10:00 on the cut knob, between 12:00 and 1:00 on the tone and depending on the gig, anywhere for 2 1/2 and 4 on the volume. This is for Country/Classic Rock.

Man, anything up to the first "number" on volume is too loud for most of my use. But it sounds so GREAT!
This amp truly sings even with the volume barely cracked-- and it just gets better from there. Truly amazing.

cut around high noon, tone usually about about 1:00 or so, and volume about 2:00. Of course that all changes depending on the venue I'm playing, the guitar I'm using, and what kind of mood I'm in at any given time.

Most of the time with my Tele it's cut at 9:00, Tone at 2:00 and Volume as loud as I can take it (although, usually for peace keeping reasons, it doesn't skate past 9:00) I use the high input always. Just a little while ago though, I was practicing and I turned the volume up to 3:00 and put the Tele in the bridge position. Ahhhhhh..............that was awesome!

for gigs I have been setting mine as follows:
Vol - about 11:00 Tone - Noon almost always Cut - about 11:00
I have found in several setting that I have tried that the cut often kinda follows the volume knob. if the tone is set at noon, the amp will thicken up as you crank the volume. Which makes me want to run more cut.

My settings depend on the speakers. My goto, and only did one gig with a different speaker cab, which is an oversized 1x12 cab loaded with a weber blue dog alnico 50 watt speaker. It's a dark inefficient speaker compared to a gold or blue. Usually using a strat but do use an SG for slide tuned open for a few tunes.
V = 2:00 airbrake or brakelite on 2 - 0 T=10:00-11:00 depending on surroundings C=3:00-5:00 depending on surroundings.
Using a 1x12 gold or 2 blues or 2 ceramic weber blue dogs V= 2:00 airbrake or brakelite on 2 - 0 T=noon - 2:00 depending on surroundings C=9:00- noon depending on surroundings

Oh man that is the first picture I've seen of the beautiful Stangray GT! It's beautiful! Please record some clips and let us hear the amazing tone in that RXES headshell! Thanks Edwin

Thanks Edwin. Unfortunately I don't have any means of making recordings of the amp. And where it really shines is playing with a band turned up and pushing some air. I can't do that at home so my home recordings would not do it justice, which is probably more me than anything else. Got to get the mojo working...

I'm really digging the settings that Brent posted in the Stangray demo video. David Baker had it set at 12:00 on the Volume and Tone and at 10:00 on the Cut. I really really like these settings. I have the volume at about 9:00 with the airbrake on though. Thanks Edwin

I gigged on the night before Thanksgiving using a Flying Dragon for the first time. Ran the volume around 3 o'clock and was still asked to turn up towards the end of the show!!! I couldn't believe it, but of course I happily obliged. Ran the tone about 1 o'clock and the cut just past noon. Loved the way this sounded, and got handfuls of compliments on the tone. Especially liked how kicking the Dragon on was working....everything was perfect.

If I'm using pedals (rock, r&b, pop gigs):
LO input, volume 9:00, tone 10:30, cut 9:00.
Without pedals (blues gigs):
LO or HI input, depending on how I feel. Volume between 1:00 and 3:00, Tone 10:30, Cut 9:00-12:00 depending on volume setting.
This is usually with the Z 2x10. Very occasionally a Zbest.
In the studio, my favourite rock rhythm tone is:
Trussart steelcaster deluxe, alnico pro 2 tele bridge pickup
LO input, Cut 9:00, Tone 11:00, Volume MAX, Zbest cab.

Les Paul Hi Imput Volume at #6 Tone around noon Cut off Z Best THAT is what the Ray does best! Ok Curt...I'm a-gonna have to give that a try. I don't have a Z-best, but I'll use the 1x12 greenback. I don't think I've ever used a humbucker guitar with my Stangray.

Get that volume knob pointed straight at the number 6 John, It'll ROCK! Green will sound good, but with a Z Best it's rightous...................albeit LOUD

i'm looking at all the settings posted here and i'm wondering what i'm doing wrong. i am running through a semi-open back cab with a gold and i run the tone at 2 to 2.5 (numbers on the knob, not on a clock) and the cut just under 2. any higher on the cut and it's too bright. any higher on the tone it's too bassy. anything near the 4 or over is ridiculously bassy. this is with my tele or strat. what am i missing, that i'm unable to run at the levels everyone else here seems to have theirs at with the Ray? is it because i'm using a 1x12?

I use a 12AT7 in the phase inverter and copper cap rec plugging into the low input and a shorting foot-switch in high input to switch between high and low with (using numbers not clock values)
vol 2-21/2 just where if I hit it hard with buckers it gets some hair tone 4-6, 4 for cleaner songs 5-6 for the dirt stuff pres 4-6, depends on the guitar or room
it's a thing of pure beauty, nothing comes close

Cut 3 Tone 6 Vol. 4 B/L 1 click Using a pair of 16ohm 2x10 closed back cabs with Greenies. 8' apart. PCNS "Y" cable to make it 8ohm. Very acoustic sounding country with a tele. cheers

I set my Ray .to Rock!!! I m using a Zsemi open 2x12 with a Gold and a Heritage GH 30 Im using humbuckers mostly , PAF style not really hot. My cut stays at 100 oclock and.the tone is mostly at 1100 and I have recently discovered the Lo input . The settings give me bite with humbuckers and with my strats i just use the tone to tame the highs. Thats the glory of Z amps you dont have to turn the knobs and tweak all night to get a good sound. The ray's chimey tone is great but with the right box in front of it the ray rocks with the best of them. ;D The Ray Rules!!!!
