Like so many guys, I've been lurking around these boards trying to decide which Z will bust my "Z cherry". It may well be the Galaxie. There are two vids from Z Fest '07 that blow my tonal head clean off. I'm sure you guys know the vids, and I've include the embeds for convenience. I have a few questions I hope the Galaxie or other Z players can help me with before making the final decision. Does anybody know the rough settings used to get the tones in the videos? I'm also curious about the speakers. Is the combo 2x10 or 1x12, it appears the head version is running through a Z-Best? Is the master volume mod Air Brake technology, and is it stock on the newest models? I am a closet, stay at home gear and blues junkie with a variety of strats, teles, and gibsons. The current amp line-up includes a Marshall Vintage Modern half stack, a Lone Star Special head and 2x12 cab, and a Super Reverb reissue. From what I've seen and heard the Galaxie appears to be a great addition to this line-up. (I'm open to other suggestions as well.) Anything you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. www.youtube.com/watchv=dZk7ceMMsqA&feature=player_embedded

Go for it. In the words of Ivan Drago, if the Marshall Vintage Modern half stack, Lone Star Special head and 2x12 cab, and a Super Reverb reissue dies then they dies.
Buy an Airbrake also with the Gal!

Thanks guys appreciate the info. Troutstat you are right if the other beasts dies so be it... sounds like you prefer the Airbrake to the master volume mod?

Welcome to the Bust Your Z Cherry Forum. Joel nailed it, 2x10 combo. The cab was a Z Best. Everything through a Z Best is excellent. The Master volume from what I recall the Doc saying at Z Fest would not be Airbrake technology but more alone the lines of the signal to the output tubes is decreased and the pre-amp circuit gives you some of the gain. Ch2 has the master volume and Ch1 is straight up Tweed tone. An airbrake or brakelite would be a good thing to go along with the Galaxie. I ran the Galaxie using 1x12 and 2x10 Dr Z Combo cabs. I really like the 2x10 over the 1x12. I don't know the settings on the Galaxie but the tone controls very useful and deceptive, lots of variations and interaction with the volume control. It's a great amp! Your other amps are not in the tweed family. I think you'll really like the beautiful tweed overtones of the Galaxie. However there are choices, the Ghia through a Z Best is pure heaven like you've never heard before. Or a Ghia combo with a Celestion Blue. I say that because all of your amps are big bottle tubes. There's something special about the el84 chime and grind. The ghia can rock like a fire breathing dragon when dimed and no pedals. It's loud but not as loud as the Galaxie. Either way you're in for a treat. Good luck.

"Welcome to the Bust Your Z Cherry Forum." LOL
Excellent info drew. You see my conundrum, the probably too loud yet awesome tweed and overdriven tones of the Galaxie vs the el84s -- neither sound is in my line-up. Its appears from reading through the forum that nobody can eat just one Z!

Welcome to the tone Galaxie. Since you came here to be talked into getting a Galaxie, let me just say that talk is cheap - you want to hear it, right? Go to the Audio section of the forum and look for Tony's (T-R☼CK ♫) Galaxie Tunes. That should push you off the fencce. My Galaxie is from the first batch so I cannot speak about the Master Volume Mod. I can tell you that my neighbors know when I plug it into my stock Z Best cabinet. I think its grinding mode sounds best with Greenbacks. A G12-65 is on my wish list specifically for this amp.

Collect them all? Ya, I wish, maybe when they come with a MacDonald's Value Meal. ;D Tony's Tunes are sweet, thanks for that.
I'm trolling around for a deal on a head.

Thanks guys appreciate the info. Troutstat you are right if the other beasts dies so be it... sounds like you prefer the Airbrake to the master volume mod? Yeah, I like the airbrake, and usually always use it. If I forget it I just end up playing pretty clean, which is fine for what I do. I only read about the master volume knob. As the mod is described now, you have to sacrifice the presence control. I don't ever want to be without that for the Gal. I would be willing to drill another hole before that. I like the Galaxie combo for my take any where any time grab and go amp. I usually play sit-ins or jam room stuff, and don't need a lot of gain. I like how transparent and toneful the Gal is. The guitar tone really comes out as a wooden instrument. Good luck with either way; head or combo. I'm sure you find your Z.
