You must have a very, very loud band. As for your dilemma, it will take experienced Z'er's to give you a good answer. I am a Newbie.

Wally, 1st, welcome to the forum... You can also use the Low input to get a little more clean headroom, and get it a little louder before it starts breaking up where you like it set on the High input. and the airbreak can be an awesome tool with the RX live, works really well. I love rolling the volume back a little with the Z's, I never did it much before playin em, but I do now... especially with a tele. That Original RX is a GREAT amp you have, you can try out a lot more and never find a better one IMHO... Jason

I agree; we original Rx owners are a lucky bunch. I like the quote from Ken Fischer that used to be on the Rx page of Z's web site:
"It would be hard to match this amp even with the Shootout winners."

Welcome Wally, Congrats on a great amp. One piece of advise. When it comes to volume wars don't play the game. Worst thing to do. The band will sound like crap. I would suggest that during a break you position the amp so you can hear it. That might be up on a chair or something. Your volume should be that, out front (take walk out some time), its just above the drummer. I have gigged the RXES many times and its got all you need for club gigs. If the other guy is turning up maybe he needs to reposition his amp too. If he's just a jerk who always has to be louder than everyone else the problem is not the gear. Its not like I'm anti-volume either. I have gigged that amp full up (really working the volume knob) many times. Its all about making good music and sounds in my book. All the best...

thanx frank, i know me and i will think about what you said every time i go to adjust to his volume, and your rite it always starts off awesome then the last two sets usually turn into sloppy mess to me anyway ,but im a perfectionist some say , and that im to hard on myself. its that i just like my stuff to sound good, its just seems hard at such high volume! this is funny cuz someone sat in one song for me the other night and i noticed my guitar wasnt even coming thru the p.a. ! i know its not gear problems its unprofessional jerk playing a twin problem! i thought about yanking a couple of his tubes during break! and thanx for the advice!!

Not to endorse a volume war or anything but... You could also do a speaker swap and get pretty dramatic results if you go with a really efficient speaker /speakers. Those greenbacks are not very efficient and good for cutting back the volume... should sound great with an RX, but they are less efficient than some other speakers ( like say a Celestion G-12 H30 or V 30) and greenbacks can lower the headroom and get you to the goods at a lower volume... You could put most ANY eminence speaker in there ( a Celestion Gold would also be more efficient and LOUD with an RX ) and you could prolly easilly keep up with your band mates they are so efficient... wanna REALLY raise the volume level, try an eminence Tonker or Wizard. BTW an eminence Private jack would be a good choice if you still kinda want that greenback sorta thing... but at much louder volume, wattage rating (about 50 watts per speaker vs 25 watts per greenback) and more clean headroom nice warmth with bite. I really like the Tonker, but I thought about trying a Private jack with the RX's myself. Weber also makes some great speakers that work well with the RX, I LOVE the Silverbells (50 watt alnico or ceramics) with the RX amps... especially the original RX. don't underestimate a good ole speaker swap, plus it's fun... and gives you some variations without spending too much $$... unless you get a C-Gold. and can always swap the greenbacks back in if you need a little lower volume. Hey Wally, I've played that amp through a number of different speakers. Jensen types and Celestion even a 15" Weber Jensen. I real had hard time getting a bad sound out of it, but, I always went back to Greenbacks with that amp because, for me, it tamed volume and I loved the tone. I'm not crazy about Greenbacks with other amps though so go figure. I did find G12h30's too bright for me in general. Everyone has different situations so unfortunatly (or fortunatly for some us crazies) you have to try them for yourself....Do yourself a favor and find a 4x12 with greenbacks. I have a 2x12 combo and thats for me but I had it in a 4x12 and that was great. I'm not going for the Paisly tone so ..... Hope this helps, probably confused you more...... I'll tell you this too.... Dr.Z chose those Greenbacks for the combo. I think he was right and I tried a few other options.

i have a 2x12 combo. The two V-30s it came with new were tooooo much. Ice pick heaven. Swap out one V-30 for a G12H30 and it sounds killer. One Greenback and one G12H30 (i plugged my amp into a mathchess combo )also sounds great but the V-30 gives a little more articulate feel and headroom with the G12h30 than the greenie does. You found the secret to that amp quick: use the guitar volume. Man what a great amp the Rx is.

I have a 212 combo as well. Got it new from Fat Sound in 2001. It came with 2 g12h30s and they go great with the amp. I've tried various other combinations but the original speakers sound best IMHO. Strange that I don't like the g12h with any other amp. But with the Original RX at 2 o'clock, magic. Loud, but magic.
