I took a couple of weeks to dial in my ES with some sweet tubes. The difference was amazing. With my combination I get very close to the "robben Ford " tone. I put in telefunken 12ax's in v1 and v3 and a telefunken ef-86 in place of the miniwatt. I realize these tubes are hard to come by, but the search will be worth the extra time and $$. This is my third Z and I love them and never plan to play any other brand. What sort of tube changes are you guys toying with? I'm always interested in pushing that tone just a little further. I also use a Hermida Zendrive for all the dirty stuff and if there was ever a D##ble in a box-this is it: DEAD ON. Pure sweetness. Thanks Dr. for giving us pickers the quality we pay for!

I tried some other power tubes the other day with some fun results. I put in two NOS JAN/Philips 6BQ5 alongside two of the stock GT EL84S's and noticed an increased aggressiveness in the upper mids. I kinda like the results. The amp still has the sweetness of the stock sound, but the extra "ARGGH" in the upper harmonics is kind of fun! Just a thought. When you kick in the Overdose (or kick on an overdrive pedal), it has a little more of a Brian May/Billy Gibbons bite that the original RX had. I doubt I would like the sound with all four power tubes being the Philips 6BQ5's, but the combination is pretty neat. Its nice to know you can do this with this amp.

That technique works , do to the RX's split load cathode bias. That is two cathode Resistors that split the pair, so you can insert to different pairs. DR.Z
