I have a '96 model Rx (regular strength). I haven't seen where anyone else is using one and wondered if there are any other players out there that either own or have owned one of these unique amps. I absolutely love mine, and for what it does it is unbeatable, IMO. I also use an Alessandro "Redbone", which has a huge bottom end, and the two amps sound like heaven together to my ears, complementing each other nicely. (They each sound great on their own, but for very different reasons) Anyway, just wondered who else had an old-style Rx. I'm thinking it may become collectible ... Adios, Slidus

I owned an original Rx a while back but had to sell it wwhen things got tight last year. I really wish I could have kept it becausse it was an amazing amp.
I ddon't doubt that the new Rx is great but I'm disappointed that they disontinued the original.

Me, too. I'm gonna try to hold on to my old Rx. I've got a 14 year old daughter who plays, and I'm thinking it will be a nice one to pass on to her, ditto the Alessandro "Redbone". Since Mike or George neither are making these particular amps any longer, I'm thinking they may actually go up in value. What do you think? I know Stephen Bruton has two Dumble's that he bought originally for $1,000 each, and he still gigs with them! I know he's been pretty amazed by what's happened with those amps. I don't expect that for either of mine, but neither did he...

First post here....Love the Z. I've already ordered an RXES 2-12 combo from a local dealer and I can hardly wait for that to come in. BUT meanwhile I found an older USED RX regular strength 2-12 (vox greenbacks) in red tolex. The sound? Yep It rocks....and I'm thinking about picking it up also. But I'm wondering if anyone knows how old it may be. I don't know what the serial number is but it does NOT have the circular "RX" logo (which is very common), the face plate says PRESCRIPTION "2-12 COMBO" Any ideas? Thanks....

Thanks for the info fellow z-sters....I called the shop and the number they read to me was G6148. If A=90, I guess its a '96 (just like slidus's). Well thanks again.

Sorry Z, If I only knew then what I know now. Like others I was out chasing the tone 'rainbow' playing boogies/marshalls, ada/hafler rack setups with studio compressors and parametric eq's and NEVER being happy with my tone or moreover being heard over my band. I've put SO much money down that well over the years its pathetic. The advice I give out to younger guys applying for instant credit to buy a Japanese ESP made out of balsa wood and a line 6 or crate is STOP. Just play a darn acoustic until you can afford real quality. Like me, In the end you'll wind up with a Z anyway and you'll be saving enough to buy a nice car.
I really don't know how you do it...I'm in the shop(GC) trying out the '96 reg and this amp is just 'in your face' with presence. I hit the low E and BOOOOOOOM (reminded me of my '70's Hiwatt but with different character). Now there is all this high gain static from other guys trying out the modeling crap and new marshalls and the Z is just cutting through like it was the only amp in the place, and at low volume too. I had a small audience after awhile and though my playing was on, this kid says..."man that's a really great amp". That bummed me out just a little.... but you've got one hell of a product there Sir.

The Original and ES are both phenominal. I a/b'd them, and I just prefer the ES.

I did. The overdose, as you know is an excellent boost, and combined with a nice tube driver, it can really rock. The regular Rx still does, just a little less oomf than the ES in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love both, I just love the ES more. The clean tones are very similar, providing the tubes and speakers are similar. So many flavors.

I have a 2000 plain RX and am completely in love. In my band, i play opposite an orange ad-30r 2x12. I continuosly get compliments from players and gear hounds about how my Dr. Z cuts through the band like no tomorrow. the presence and chime that this thing creates is out of this world. I was very very lucky to find my amp on Ebay last year for $1000.00 USD including a ($300 value) calzone case. I was kinda dissapointed because at the time i was in the market for a maz SR, but i couldn't pass up the price. now, after gigging and recording with my RX for about 8 months, i can only thank God that I bought this amp. maybe i'll still get a 38SR one of these days, but I'm NEVER selling my RX.

I still have yet to try the RX ES, but i am still not done w the RX original. Ive had it for 5 years now and i have yet to completely get all the tonal possibilities out of it. Of course all these great revues of the ES make me want to run out and try it, but im so satisfied with the RX that theres really no rush to do so. www.failedexperimentrecords.com/audio/thesea.mp3for a sound sample...no overdubs, no effects, analog recorded!!!

I've got one that i bought sight unseen on recommendation from Stu at Fat Sounds. At first i thought i'd made a mistake because you really need to learn to play the amp and it is so non forgiving. when you sound sucky everyone knows. Now you couldn't get it away from me for love or money. I get tons of compiments from other guys. I compared it at a gig to a player who was getting great tone from a bassman reissue with a bunch of pedals in front of it. when i got to play the z stomped his rig with nothing but guitar and cord. what Tone.
The touch on that amp is so killer. The other day i let some guy play through it and the key board play was yelling at me to turn it down on the guy because it was so cutting. When i got back on stage i actually had to turn it up louder than the other guy had it to get where i wanted to be and recieved no complaints from the key board player. That amp is all in the hands. Brush it for chime and smack it for crunch.

I've had an original Rx for about three years. I used it occasionally in practice and brought it to gigs as a backup for my Maz 18. It always sounded "okay", playing it through the 2x10s in the Maz or through a Mesa 1x12 cab with a Black Shadow. However, once I got a new speaker for the Mesa cab (C.Rex), the amp really came alive. I don't want to play anything else. Great clean, handles any pedal I throw at it with ease. Crunch, snap, balls. This amp has got it goin' on. Humbuckers, P-90s (ahhhh), tele, you name it. I am one happy guitar player.

I love my RX, got it years ago when they first came out. I've read a lot of interesting stuff about the RX ES but I can't imagine needing more 'overdose' than my original has turned WAY up, and just ride the git-tar volume to clean 'er up a little. Ran it and a '58 burst (borrowed, of course;^) through a Carvin 4X12 that somebody left at the studio back when we were recording "Blues For The Lost Days" with Mr. Mayall on a tune called 'Dead City'. I was very happy with the results! Just one of those times when the stars align jes' right...

BW It's interesting you said this... " I've read a lot of interesting stuff about the RX ES but I can't imagine needing more 'overdose' than my original has turned WAY up" I have both and to tell you the truth if I had to keep one or the other I think I'd keep the original... I really like the ES.... I think it is a little more articulate than the original when it starts to break up and in the low end.... but I set my ES to get the sound I get (and love) out of the original ( difference is don't really have to turn the ES up as much to get there and theres a WHOLE lot more gain left I don't use.... AND I don't use the overdose cause the ES without the overdose on is like the old one with the EXPAND and BRIGHT BOTH ON.... kinda like the ES just takes up where the original left off.... duh, maybe thats why doc called it the extra strength??? ) BUT, all in all....I just LOVE the OLD one and I guess I don't need all the extra drive... just that sound it has and the percussiveness.... Just curious BW, on "dead city" how LOUD was it/ or was the volume set on when you recorded it, if you happen to remember??? my OLD RX just seems to get the magic around 7 (2:00).... ;D Jason

Well, I'm purty sure she was wound right on up there, 7 might be a little conservative! Really, the 'buckers in that old Les Paul were pushin' it a lot harder than my strat ever could, which is why I don't use 'buckers very much anymore. But when ya need 'em, nothin' else is quite the same. Powerglide!

Hello all.
First off I must confess that I do not own any Z products. But that does not stop me from wanting one! My main amp is a 63' AC30. Anywho, the reason for this post/hijack is to ask a question. The other guitar player in our band is the current owner of an original Prescription combo and the handle has come loose. Do any of you folks know how to safely pop off the handle bracket cover to get at the screw to tighten it? Also, does anybody know if that screw goes into a T-nut? BTW, this amp sounds great! Thanks, B.

I also am a proud original owner of an original original strength Rx head in british racing green (or v close). Love the thing to bits. Wonderful tones across the board - clean it's almost piano like and wound up I can get the most musical and controlled feedback from any amp I've ever had. I even was lucky enough to get BW to play throught it once whilst he was touring these european climes. This amp gets a lot compliments and seemed to get a whole lot more with BW playing through it ! tremblox
