Well I've had my eyes open for a long time now up here in Canada, trying to snag an older Mazerati. I owned the Carmen Ghia for a short time loved it, but in the bands I played in it couldn't keep up in the mix. The bands I play in I can Use my Ray on 3 to 3 1/2 without an airbreak. My Victorilux is usually on 7 or 8. So I thought the older Mazerati basically being a double powered Ghia would work great. So I'm wondering now about the Mazerati GT. How much is it different then the original Mazerati? I've read about it on the Dr Z site and it describes using the guitar volume to clean it up. I don't like doing that. When I turn my guitar volume down it really loses top end and doesn't sound good. How loud can the Mazerati GT be before you start breaking up?

The Mazerati GT has one volume - full. The knob on the front; the one with the "Volume" label? That really just dials in how much dirt you want. And you get dirt from about the onset of sound. GREAT dirt, but dirt. It is the polar opposite of your 'ray in that regard. That's why you need a way to get to the cleans, which is why guys who are playing this amp use their guitar's volume control. With a volume kit in your guitar, it really does work pretty great.
I had one of the later model Mazerati's (2006) and it was more like my Stingray than my Mazerati GT. It could do dirt, but it had to be very loud to get it. But you could also play it pretty clean. That isn't going to be the case with the GT unless you turn the guitar down. It's raunch from the word go.

Is there no variation of volume what soever on the volume from 1 to 10?. I'm thinking maybe this would be a good match with my Ray.

Benttop's 100% right. If you're looking for the ultimate 2 amp rig and are not going to use the GT's cleanish side via your guitar's volume pots, then may I humbly suggest a GT and an EZG? The EZG will keep up with the GT volume wise. The Mazerati GT and the "original" Mazerati have nothing in common but the name, an input jack, and four EL84's

GT and EZG would absolutely KILL!

What about the EZG and Remedy as a rig?

When I turn my guitar volume down it really loses top end and doesn't sound good. I fought for years with my SG to brighten it up. 3-4 pickup changes etc. I finally got the treble bleed modification and it sounds great. Split coils with both pickups in parallel is almost stratish. I'd consider trying this mod before buying a whole new amp. However, I cannot imagine the GT being a bad choice. ;D

As for tone loss with volume roll off, THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH THE GT!!
I never use my volume knob or tone knob (stock vintage fender) with my Route 66 or Ac15. In fact, I felt like all strats were "broken" until I played one through a GT.
I guess Leo Fender's tone knob design isn't utterly useless after all; he must have anticipated that someone 50 years later would build an amp that could do justice to his creation.
Thank you Doc for "fixing" my strat!

Got a treble bleed capacitor fitted to all my Strats (except the EC Signature model which doesn't need it) and it transforms the instrument. I work the GV like Derek Trucks now and my Maz18 loves it - SO dynamic! (Sorry, I know I'm on the GT post, but thought I'd throw in my two-pence worth on the GV bit ;D )

I have a GT and I use it every outside gig and sometimes inside and I set the vol on 11 o clock and use my volume on my prs and the coil taps to clean it up and I love the cleans! I do not like the air brake on the gt at all. but thats just me. benttop has some of the best clips i've ever head from a gt recorded. Check them out!

Is there no variation of volume what soever on the volume from 1 to 10?. I'm thinking maybe this would be a good match with my Ray. Doc did some work on a Stangray GT - 2 channel amp. One was Stangray clean the other Maz GT raunch. Ask Drew (as he has one of the prototypes) how he likes it!! (I already know )

Another thought - what about the Galaxie along with the Ray? Listen to some of Tony's stuff with his Galaxie from the 2nd Channel - you might like it! Plus they are easier to find than the Maz GT

Clean to mean with lots of tone in between.
