Hi all - lurker up to now (sounds creepy) but a Z player since '99. My first was a Maz Jr with Celestion Vintage 10's, remember those...nice speakers...currently have a Maz Jr head/old style 2X10, and a 1x12 cab w/20w Greenback.
Anyway, toying with the idea of the RX Jr - but I have the TopHat described above, and I'm wondering how much of the same ground they'll cover.
The TH has a good master volume, and a "boost" type function as well - doesn't have the the 5Y3, but an EZ81 rect, and no EF86, which I know gives the Jr at least part of its sig tone.
The TH gives a nice Marshall type of sound IMO - used with a Vintage 30 - which is what I'm after. Love Z's amps, and wondering what I might be missing with the RX Jr...anyone have or heard both?
thanks - strictly

Strictlydrz, Welcome to the Forum! I'm not familiar w/ the TH CR, but the RXJr. does Marshall better than Marshall. I run mine through Weber "Greenback" type speakers, and it sounds amazing. I A/B'd it w/ Marshall's HW 18 watt combo, and the RXJr. blew it away. Even the store owner agreed that the Z had a better "vintage" Marshall vibe (and he doesn't sell Zs!). Rich

Thanks for the welcome ;D I'm probably wrong but I thought a few of the good Dr's EL84 designs were "loosely" based on either Marshall or Vox circuit topology types - of course with that little something extra thrown in that makes them special. At one time or another I've had a Maz Sr, Jr, or Route 66 - but still favor the EL84 amps. I've played a 1974X, and like the Maz Jr better - it has 98% of the Marshall sound and is much more versatile to my ears - I'm not a purist though. Ha - I have no doubt I wouldn't get it back Honestly, till I picked up the CR, Z's stuff was all that I consistently had on hand though all of my "experimenting." Try one of Mr. Gerhard's amps, and I'm pretty sure you'll love it. No I'm not affiliated. strictly

At the same time I'm 100% positive you would get your amp back from me. I'm just cool like that. DAVE

The RXJr does great Marsallesque tones but it also does so much more. It has great cleans for country rock and does Vox better than Vox IMHO. I have both Jrs. (MAZ and RX) and I love them both. I am not seriously craving any other tones.

Just kidding and no offense intended.
Thanks for the info - since I'm not too far from Willcutts, I'll try to get down that way and check one out.
