I finally got it in. It sounds good except for the wound strings and they are flat sounding. Muffeled is a better word. No crispness at all. The unwound strings sound fantastic. This amp came with a Red Fang 12". Could that be the problem? I really like the way my tele sound in it except the wound strings sound like I have my hand on them as if to muffle them.

I have a Red Fang in mine, sounds fine? You can't really run the tone up past 3:00 or 4:00, that does kill all the "crispness" in the amp (not saying you do that, but thought I'd throw that out). I keep my tone around 2:00-2:30 and I have a nice, well rounded tone without it being muffled sounding.
Not sure what could be causing that problem? Maybe the preamp tube or some *very* used power tubes?

I guess I will change the tubes cause thats where I have the tone also. Like I said the unwound strings are great. Thanks a bunch.

Out of all the Z's I've had, my Mazerati is the least britest one (but still plenty bright for me)..... keep that in mind as well, it just doesn't have quite the "chime" that the Ray has. It took me a while to get used to the Ray and RxES, I thought they were too brite at first.. But now, most other amps I considered "perfect" now sound dull.

Perfect comparison. I just A/B/Ced my Maz 38/Stang Ray/Mazerati and there is a lack od chim in the rati. However, if I could get a little more crispness on my wound strings it might very well be my favorite. I love the compressed sound it has, and when I push it hard it really sings. Thanks telejas. In fact you've been really helpful to me as was looking for this amp and now as well. Heres one for ya. Getcha some.

I was thinking that I read somewhere that a 12ax7 in place of the 5751 can brighten it up some? It's worth a try.
