I played the Mazerati (and only the Mazerati) this weekend at a couple of gigs - 1 band and 1 acoustic (where I play some electric too). I *almost* liked it better than my Stangray I didn't see that one coming!?!? For rock stuff, I did like it better than the Stangray!!!! It has a more defined mid-range, even in the low-mid range area, and a little *meaner* distortion tone to it when pushed (volume around 1:00 and a Tubescreamer or two), where the Stangray is a little smoother. The cleans were GREAT too, but not quite as 3-D or spongy as the Stangray, but DANG they were nice! Over-all, I still like the Stangray better but I can see where I could get along without the Stangray if I had to for some reason.... Don't worry, no thought of selling the Ray. But the Ray may get a weekend off every now and then

I think it's amazing that each one of these amps has its own personality. Of course the down side is that I want one of each, but if we can get the Doc to slow down on the new designs for a while, I might be able to catch up!

I must admit I have had serious thoughts about picking up one on the 2nd hand market. Their have been a couple on Ebay that have gone reasonably cheap and although it's not one of the Docs most talked about amps, could put a big smile on my face. I'm not into knob twiddling, just dialing in and leaving and using the volume on my guitar and pedals on my board to get various overdrives. I really like the look of the one on the Docs website with the hardwood front panel. I think a head with various speaker cabs would cover lots of basis. I play a lot of Mark Knopfler strat stuff. It sounds to me that the Mazerati with the volume at about 10' and tone at noon would kill that in a club of up to 100. I already have 3 EL84 amps. The Maz Invasion, Ghia and a little EVJ 5 watter and thought that might be enough as far as EL84's. Then again, it's amazing, the differences in all of them, are way more than the similarities. Decisions, decisions, the Doc sure makes it hard with so many fantastic designs

I knew you'd chime in here eventually Dave.
I'll give you +1 karma for the rap you gave on the Tonker being great with the Ghia as a big clean alternative. You were a big influence on me biting the bullet and buying Greg G's off the forum. I was reluctant as the I'd tried a few other Eminence speakers and found them a little lacking tone wise. I swapped the 70 watt Lady Luck out of my Epi valve junior cab (horrible sounding speaker) and loaded the Tonker in and believe it or not, it even made that little 5 watt EVJ sound tons better. The Tonker doesn't quite chime like my pe-rola greenback with the Ghia but it does give me what the greenie can't, lots more volume and an even bigger, tighter bottom end. It's definitely got it advantages in certain situations. Just as a matter of interest, do you own a Mazerati? If so what speaker/speakers are you running with it and is there anywhere I can hear some of your stuff as I'm keen to hear more of your tones after your advice was right on with the Ghia/Tonker?
Much appreciated.
George

I've played a couple more shows, another band show and an acoustic show....
FYI: I put a Beam Blocker in the amp this past week....... At first I thought it killed too many highs, but after this weekend I think it's perfect - only time will tell.
At the band show, I ran the Mazerati with the Stangray and I could really tell the difference. I know I mentioned it in another post, but the Mazerati had a real strong mid range compared to the Ray...... I also forgot my other attenuator, so I couldn't crank the Mazerati and had to play it rather low..... It really sounds better cranked a little, where the Ray can sound good cranked or not.
At the acoustic show, I had my attenuator with me so I got to crank it up to get some slight grit. I still am really impressed with the Mazerati and think it's the perfect amp for my needs when I just need a combo.
Can't wait to run them both with attenuators!!

I have a Tonker in the combo and a swamp thang in the 112 ext cab. sometimes I will use it loaded with a Weber Blue Dog Alnico if its gonna be a quiet gig. and put the Ghia on top. lots of possibilities. gonna get me a new 112 ext cab , cant wait. glad I could help out on your decisions . there's some youtube stuff and there are some clips on my web site and CD Baby as well as myspace.

Just an update...... I now have 5 shows under the Rati's belt and I like it even more now! I'm really getting a feel for this amp and used it two times this weekend without the Stangray. I used it last weekend with the Stangray, and the Stangray kind of "over powered" it since it was running in to a 2x12 cab, so I couldn't get a good idea of how it sounded at a "big" gig until this weekend (thats why I didn't bring the Ray). It passed with flying colors. Just wanted to give an up date and get the Mazerati forum up to date with the rest of the forum

Jason, I love my Mazerati as well! Glad the tone is working for you brother. Your reviews are spot on. I have a 112 combo that I now run with a g12h30 ext. 112 cab. It is like an open back Z-best! Later, Paul

I bought one off this forum a little while back and have been in love with it ever since. I'm a total gear nut, constantly looking for something else, but this amp has had me captivated since I got it. I'm running the head through a 1x12 cabinet with a Tonker. If I change anything, I might go to the Tonkerlite. The voice of this amp just suits me perfectly though. Tight bottom, lots of good, broad mids, and great highs that chime without piercing. It's been a long honeymoon for me.
