Since it's discontinued, I can't try one but hear great things about this amp. I like the crunch on the Maz 18 & 38 but found the Ghia too clean.. Where does the Mazerati fit in between these 2 amps? Does it have a very raw edgy sound, or more clean/creamy/saturated?

I've never heard of a Ghia being described as too clean! I had a Mazerati for a while but never explored how dirty it would get. It never had enough clean for me. Bluzsteel is currently gigging a Mazerati. Perhaps he'll chime in or you could PM him.

My Mazerati is nearly too clean. It is very organic and blooms and compresses nicely. For example, a Rt 66 has nearly no clean (if you play softly it cleans up, if you hit it, it compresses (they're beautiful amps)). The Mazerati seemed much more natural to me than the Maz stuff. As far as the clean/dirty situation, it depends on what you play it through. I have a ZBest 212 with Weber Silver Bells (30watts each) and with P90's in a Goldtop I get a little grit at about 9 o'clock. But not distortion grit, natural compression. This amp deson't break up easily...you have to push it (and the speakers). After 9 o'clock, it doesn't nessisarily get louder, it just gets more compressed. In this amp, that's not the same as distortion. I hope you get to try one. (They actually do sound a bit like the sound clip on the Z page). Hope that helps.

I found the Mazerati very unusual in its clean vs. crunch sounds.
Beautiful cleans up to a point and then the cleans got muddy for minor chords. I found it a VERY nice soling amp and simple chords (5th's of course and major 3rd's) but had problems backing off and playing minor chords. It would sound great playing Wait 'til Tommorrow (Hendrix) around 11 o'clock to noon.
Full up it cranks nice power chords like a mid-gain Marshall.

Mazerati and a BB preamp. Crunch and tone for days. If you can stand to wait the MAZERATI GT will be out early next year. That is on my wish list! It smokes. Gain for days! 6strang

Take a look through all the threads in the Z-Lounge about the Z amp-fest earlier this month. It seems the good Doc has been busy cooking up new amps, and one of his laboratory experiments is a higher-gain Mazerati. The folks who went to the Z-fest got to go to the shop and play some of the prototypes of the new models. Based on the reactions I read I'm very interested to hear a Mazerati GT. Although all of the new models look really interesting. Crikey

Does it have a very raw edgy sound, or more clean/creamy/saturated? I think if you found a Ghia too clean, you'd find a Mazerati even more so. It does a bit of crunch, especially with humbuckers, but I wouldn't call it saturated. It never gets into the buzzy Marshall kind of distortion sound, but retains a kind of clarity in the distortion that I really like. I saw on YouTube that you have a Delta 88, which is another Z that can distort without ever sounding buzzy or fuzzy. The Mazerati is more on the Beatles-esque side than that, though. You might want to listen to a Prescription Extra Strength, and to the Mazerati GT when it comes out. Cheers, Crikey

I found a youtube link for the Mazerati GT. www.youtube.com/results?search_query=z+mazerati+gt&search=SearchDayum! I think I'm hearing about the gnarliest sound I may have ever heard from a Z. If it's too loud I wish they had an Airbrake set up to demo the amp at full up. This one might require a 'brake or a master volume if possible (perhaps a'la the way it's being done on the RX Jr?) as the beast might not fly in clubs seating under a thousand people or so! ;D There was a complaint on one vid about 'almost too much gain' though in sometimes I question if there is really any such thing. YMMV. It seems they were speaking in terms of getting cleans, though of course, that's what one would expect of a Z. OK, hearing loss could be a problem too. It seemed like there was some nice low end thump on there as well. I could feel it through my computer speakers when turned up a little. Nice.

I've owned two Mazeratis, two Maz18's, and a Ghia.. the Mazerati definitely stays clean longer/louder than the other, but its crunch/breakup is one of the best I've heard from any amp. With a strat, it starts to get hairy around 12:00, starts to get a good crunch around 3:00, and between 3:00 and full out, I never needed an overdrive pedal. It's a raw, vox-meets-marshall type of crunch to my ears. One of my favorites amps for blues, fusion, and classic rock at club gig levels - crunch and even overdrive tones with a pedal, and it'll clean right up with the guitar's volume knob. No idea why the doc chose the Mazerati to be amongst the "discontinued".

I just have two things to add:
1) I was in the room at Z-Fest when those GT's were played, and I can tell you that the video clips *do not* do that thing justice. In person it had the "sound of doom" (in a good way).
2) All Mazerati's are not created equal. Somewhere between the time the Doc created the Mazerati and when he discontinued it he changed transformers, which resulted in a different sound. I've seen some that start getting dirty like a Ghia at 9:00 on the volume knob, and some that stay clean until 1:00 and then still don't get as saturated as the "other" type. This is totally my speculation, but I believe Brad P's first Mazerati was the "dirtier" type.
