Hello, I just recently sold my Ghia head to make way for a new Z. I sold the Ghia because when using it in rehearsal, I had to pretty much crank it all the way just to be able to compete in volume with my drummer. My question is: Does the RX jr maintain a fairly clean tone at loud volumes? Or, Do I need to consider something higher powered if I wish to maintain clean tones at rehearsal volumes? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Darryl

If the Ghia couldn't hang, then chances are the RXJR won't either. The RXES, however, would have no problem keeping up. The only problem is that the RXES doesn't have a master volume to knock the overall volume down when you don't need it.
I don't know if it is the tone you're looking for, but the EZG-50 is very clean and very loud and very Fender. Not much like the RX line of amps. They are very gainy and ballsy amps mainly due to the EF86 in them and where it is in the signal path. Another loud and clean amp that leans to the more Vox side of things is the Stangray. It's based on a non top boost ac30 with the good Doc's twist. Anyways, hope that helps.

Thanks for you help. I'm looking to spend around $1200. I would LOVE a stangray, but i think its just a little out of my price range. I'm also considering the maz series as a Z w/reverb sounds tasty. Also, my buddy has a MAZ 18NR and it was definitely louder than my 18w ghia. My local Z dealer enthusiast Bill from Legends guitars in Tampa says the MAZ JR is THE LOUDEST 18w amp he's ever heard. I'm just sayin....

It's pretty loud but it doesn't maintain the clean loud like the Stangray. The Stang is the king of clean loud!

The Maz JR with reverb has a little less output than the NR version. Just FYI. If your concern is overall volume and you go with a Maz JR, go with the NR. My last Z (before my RXJR) was a Maz JR, and Bill is right, it is a very loud 18 watts. If you can wait around for a used one to show up, the Stangray would be the way to go for what you're describing, OR, consider a used Maz SR with reverb. You know what, that may be exactly the way to go for you...... It's LOUD, has a reverb, and has a master volume so you can tame the volume if needed or use it to balance the preamp distortion to taste. Ok, I'm officially changing my suggestion: Maz SR is my suggestion. The Jr an Sr are both a real Swiss army knife of tone. But only you can decide what fits your needs; this is just my opinion. :-)

I think the RxJr. with OD on all the time and the hi input will keep up.
We rehearse kind of loud sometimes in a 5 piece and I can get the cleans I want... but that's me.
When you get the Ghia into the compression territory I can see how it may get lost but youse guys must be VERY LOUD cuz the Ghia is loud at that point too!!
Have you put in new power tubes lately?

I changed the tubes about 2 weeks after I got it. (I purchased it used). When I went to retube it, there were 12ax7's in both v1 and v2. I think that was part of my problem also.

If your Ghia ain't geting it done for you then you might need to tell your drummer to tone it down some. Sense that generaly doesn't work to well. You need a bigger amp.
RXES would be my vote, based off the sound of I hear in the RxJr.
You can pick up EXES here on this site for $1200

Yeah, 12ax7's in v1 AND v2 would definately get the power tubes cooking earlier. That would explain your difficulty keeping it clean(er) at higher volumes.

if yer runnin the master up all the way i dont think you'll have a problem with the RXJR. its nice and clean and "drummer loud". and the level of dirt really depends on the type of pickup and yer pick attack. the JR is very sensitive to what yer slamming the front end with. happy hunting Pete

My Jr though 2 12s is plenty loud. If I don't carefully watch my volume, I get the stink eye from the other guitar player in our band. Last Sunday, we were playing outside and when I was adjusting the the volume and master I got the stink eye before I even got the master set. Thinking back, it's sort of annoying . . .

now that ive been playin this thing fer a while ive come to a great conclusion. the RXJR is three amps, all with different gain characteristics. amp #1 is with the master cranked then you use yer volume control as you like. amp #2 is with both the master and the volume @ 12 o'clock and this is an awesome "pick attack grind" setting (especially when you get the overdose involved). and amp #3 is with the front volume cranked and you can use the master as you like. then to OD or not to OD................. that is the question. you cant go wrong with this l'il amp. be well on this weekend of remembrance, PP
