So...I know that running the tubes hotter should technically shorten their lifetime. Anybody have an estimate on how much shorter the tube life should be? I ask because of the disclaimer in the KCA-NOS el-84 section that talks about a possible cause for short tube life in cathode-biased amps, and want to know whether I need to have the MAZ checked out: kcanostubes.com/categories/87/1/EL84.htmNoticed a loss of volume while playing last night that happened when I needed new power tubes last time. It will factor into how much I spend on tubes if its a once a year thing or a once every six months purchase. Used to run my MAZ38 at 9:00 on both volumes. Now running them both around 1:00.

I just read the entire article, and it really has nothing at all to do with attenuation. It has to do with how hot the amp designer set the bias in the first place.
FYI, in my opinion, attenuation can't do a thing to accelerate tube wear in a cathode-biased amp. The tubes are running full bore all the time. In fact, they actually run cooler when you are playing wide open. Attenuators do nothing to accelerate tube wear in this kind of amp.
