well I played the Rati at a real cool gig Sat night and came to a conclusion , it needs to be at a Outdoor fest. or take out the Tonkers and put a couple of Red Fangs or something 30 - 50 watt. it felt like I was tryin to hold the halter of a pissed off Bronco. wished I would have taken my Ghia and a 212 cab ,wouldve been perfect ....of well you learn . now next week is outdoors so I 'll be back with that review

Dave, I'd get that Tonker outa there, I have a Red Fang here but never tried it with the 'rati, it smokes with the MAZ Jr NR. I can bring it up next trip for you to test drive if you'd like. I ran the 'rati with a Texas Heat, lower output and let me work the EL84's a bit more, your welcome to test it also.
Lemme know.

Hey Dave
How are you running your Mazerati? Are you getting your overdrive strictly from the amp? Just wondering. I run mine as a clean platform for pedals, but I can definitely see how getting OD from the amp would be pretty damn loud! Later,

Later, jz Hey Jc, would rather get it from the amp ,but man , its gonna take a outdoor fest I believe , or maybe a less efficient speaker

I'm really surprised at how my Weber Blue Dog 50W Alnico knocks down the volume of an amp. YMMV. WBD in the ghia and I can't overpower with the band. Put in a Texas Heat or Swamp Thang and the ghia is plenty loud for what I do and can easily rise above the band. I've tried the same experiment with the MAz Sr, RXES and 6545, the WBD Alnico is the only speaker that lets me push the power section and keep the ashtrays on in the first row. I've never played a Celestion Blue...

You'll have to let us know what you think. It's got it's own unique sound - compressed with chime. IMHO and limited skp experience it likes an open cab but not too open. In an avatar 1x12 oval open back cube the speaker is wonderful. Big and chewey. In my mesa 1x12 widebody the bass response didn't thrill me when pushed hard. It rocks in a closed 1x12 with plenty of thud, if that's what you like.

Ok got my Blue Dog 50 watt Alnico, put it in the 112 combo . sounds good, real good. Im thinking a small gig it might just be perfect and a bigger gig , put the Tonker loaded 112 ext cab under it . best of both worlds? we'll see

I'm really surprised at how my Weber Blue Dog 50W Alnico knocks down the volume of an amp. Right on, Drew. I just went back to my Weber blue alnico 50 because the Cele Gold is just too freakin' loud. I don't use an attenuator and have not been able to tame the loudness factor, all the while keeping the amp in the 'sweet spot'. The Weber blue is back in for now.

Taming of the Mazerati...
I tried the Blue Dog Alnico 50W in a 1x12 openback cab and a 1x12 swamp thang loaded open back cab. Whoa that's loud. The swamp thang was the dominate speaker, the combination was huge sounding.
Bill, good to hear it helped. I picked up the BD from James (jmm...) after reading Rockstok's post about the BD taming the RXES. It's been a workhorse for me. ;D

Dave -
I'm currently running my Mazerati through a G12H30 or an EVM200L. It's not loud at all, beautiful fat, round sound. I suspect it may be the tube compliment I'm using. In that case, I'm not gonna screw with it unless I lose one.

I have a Weber Blue Dog Alnico 50 watt in the Combo and a Tonker in the 112 cab under it . very cool I have never mixed a low wattage speaker and a high watt let alone a Alnico and a ceramic together, I had tone last night

"well one bad deal I can think of , BW I think was in on a deal that went south. He and I were playing at a joint one night and a guy was selling a brand new Sony HI Fi DVD player for 40 bucks .I gave him 20 and told him to bring me the Sony and he would get the other 20 , he came back and he handed me the new in the box Sony, took off running and we opened it up and there was two bricks in it. the reason I think Buddy was in on it was that he laughed his assss off at my expense. I didnt even get the remote for the bricks for at least a week later. I think I still have the remote BUD!!! "COME ON, MAN! You're gonna blow the deal for EVERYBODY! The guy's standin' RIGHT OVER THERE!" Man, was that funny. Well worth the twenty bucks!

Putting the tonker on the bottom must be the way to go.

You were right on the money. I'm loving this speaker more and more with low powered heads. It not only sounds outstanding with the Ghia but I also run it with my little 5 watt Epiphone Valve Junior head. The stock speaker that came in the matching cab was absolutely horrid but the tonker kills it . I never thought a 150 watt speaker would sound good with a 5 watt amp but it does. I agree with it sounding great with a tele, it's like it was made for it.
