Just got my new Mazerati today. I bought it because my Maz Jr didn't have quite enough headroom and the Mazerati, I thought, had a reputation for having more headroom than the Maz Jr and more bell-like tones. It certainly does have more bell-like qualities to it - really gorgeous, sparkly tones. What surprises me though is that the amp starts to break up at around 10 oclock on the volume. It almost seems like it has *less* headroom than my 18 watt Maz, and this amp has around 32 watts.
No question to post here really, just my own observation in case anyone is curious.

Hmmm.... My Mazerati starts to cook between 1 and 2 o'clock. I would say check all your tubes and see what's in there. Rectifier and pre-amp tube for sure... I am using a solid state rectifier in mine and I like the results. More headroom, faster response with pick attack... What type of guitar and pickups are you using? Hot pickups will make a difference....

Hmmm...that is strange. Mine will stay relatively clean up to almost 3:00 if I jockey my guitar volume a little bit and/or vary my pick attack....depending on where I'm going with it. Unless you're a real basher or have unusually hot pickups, that doesn't sound right.

Is your Mazerati a new one? or older one? I think the older ones were essentially the Carma Gia and are dirtier than the new ones. Mine is a newer one, and it starts to noticably break-up around 12 o'clock (and I haven't change to the lower gain 5751 tube yet either). At 10 o'clock it is pretty fricken loud and easily keeps up with my loud rock band. My 2x12 cab is detuned, with one celestion g12h and one V30 - so it's pretty efficient. I do use single coils from a 62 USA jaguar RI - so those are pretty low output pups.

Thanks for the replies...
Brand spankin' new Mazerati. Not a "basher" Uncle Pat ;>) although I've been known to mangle notes...
I'll need to see what's under the hood for tubes - I'm assuming it came with the stock tube complement, and it darn well better have or it ain't new.
Could be hot pickups - playing a Tele with Joe Bardens in it, and they're pretty powerful.
It does have only 1x12, so maybe an extension cab would open up the sound a bit more too.

I use mine 90% of the time with only a 1x12 (G12H30 Celestion) cab and it's still pretty darn clean. The only guitar I use that will drive it into a frenzy is my homemade Tele (Duncan Quarter Pounder bridge) with no-load pots. Something weird's going on, but I don't know what.

UnclePat - do you ever worry about blowing your G12H30? Isn't that speaker rated at only 30 watts? It is absolutely my favorite speaker, and I've been thinking about making a nice 1x12 open-back cab for portability (my 2x12 cab is a pain to haul around, it's the size of a typical 4x12).

Yes, I do. I can't honestly say it never crosses my mind when the volume knob gets a healthy clockwise twist, but my G12H30 is a Ted Weber recone so it's probably better than a factory unit. The highest I've ever had that 'Rati head cranked is 3PM, and a compressor set for a clean lead boost on top of that. So far it's worked great...
Now that I say that, it will most certainly fry at the next gig I play with it. ;D

My experience with my new Mazerati 212 was exactly the same as Ignatius's. I also have a Maz jr and it has more clean, however the mids of the Mazerati cut through without having to be as loud. I actually favor the clean of the Maz jr.

Just realized that I never came back to follow up on this thread. It turns out that my initial audition of the Mazerati in my basement must have been quite a bit louder than I realized, hence the slight breakup. I've since done about a half dozen gigs with my new Mazerati, and it stays quite clean. I replaced the stock V30 with an Eminence Red Fang, and wow, what an amp. At settings approaching 11:00 I do notice a slight, pleasing breakup when I dif into the strings pretty hard, but it's a "nice" clean. And that's getting pretty loud up around 11:00 - in smaller clubs I've been running it lower. I think my initial audition, as I mentioned, was louder than I realized, and I also think I might have been hearing an artifact from the V30 that didn't agree with me. Now I can say this amp is the nicest I've owned, and a keeper for sure.

Had those 84's smokin' didja? ;D ;D Sounds a lot like something I would do in the basement too. Just came up from there myself and my ears are still ringing a little. I don't gig nearly as loud as I practice at home with the little woman out of the house. The neighbors love me...

Mine "starts" to break up around 10:00 too. Are you talking about going into pretty gainy or just starting to break up.
I think after noon-1 the amp does not get that much louder just more gain. So 10-11 would be where things start to overdrive.
This is the case for both humbukers and single coils for me.

I had a Mazerati head for a while. I only gigged it once and used an Electrovoice 12". I couldn't get enough clean to do the jazzier things so I traded it back in on a Maz 38 sr. It has a lot more clean available. YMMV
