Howdy
What's everyone using in their Mazeratis these days? I'm trying out JAN GE 5751's in both positions this weekend. I liked how it sounded in my house, but I won't know for sure til I crank it on stage. I've been using JJ EL84s and a JJ Rectifier. Anyone try Myles' idea of swapping one pair of power tubes with something different? I'd like to try the non-JJ Teslas.
Take care!

I bought my 'Rati used, and it came with a set of JJ's for power tubes, a GE JAN 5751, and a rather harsh sounding ECC83 that I replaced with a GT12AX7M. That really smoothed out the rough edges. Everything else has stayed the same, but I wouldn't mind finding a nice set of NOS something power tubes to stick in there and fart around with. Ya' just never know.... I got to really crank it at an outdoor gig this past weekend, about 3PM on the volume knob.... *ohhhh yesssssssssss*Pure sweetness.

I'm in the market for a new set of power tubes for my mazerati. I am thinking of going with the JJ EL84s and a JJ 5aR4 as well. I have a couple of EH 12ax7s in both slots and I am really suprised at how it sounds. More fuller and stronger I think. The amp still has the stock GT EL84s in it now. Uncle Pat, how does that GE Jan 5751 sound?

I'm using JAN GE 5751s in both positions and I'm really liking them. They sound pretty smooth - I'm using pedals for my overdrive and the 5751s compliment them nicely. I don't like a ton of high end, so this works well for me. I put a JJ rectifier in as well. Hard to tell a difference, but they are supposed to be better than the Sovteks. I'm also running JJ EL84s and have had good luck with those. I believe the stock GT EL84s are actually JJs, too.

I've used that same tube in a Carmen Ghia head, and it was nice....but I swapped it out for a 12BH7 for some more clean headroom in that particular head. I can't really compare the 5751 in any other setting as I've had it in the Mazerati from day one, and it seems to be doing it's thing just fine. No rattles, sweet tone, etc. The GT12AX7M made a nice difference in that amp though.

I too, am using two GE jan 5751's. I also replaced the rect w/GT ss. I usually use separate preamps and these 5751's have alot less noise. I was toying with the idea of having a low-sensativity input, or possibly a line-in jack installed. The 5751's seem to suffice nicely without changing the amp too much.

Hey rrajo
How do you like the solid-state rectifier in the Mazerati? I was thinking of trying this. I'm still digging the 5751s in both positions, too.

Well, firstoff, I must say that the Mazerati is the most versatile Head I have played through. I still can't believe it only has two controls; yet, the variations of tone are tremendous. When I am using the head for rock/blues...Hendrix, ZZ Top, Allmands etc...I use two 12ax7w's along with the tube rect and get everything from Wind Cries Mary to La Grange. The tube rect is great for long sustained bends that stay thick without drop-out. But for fast picking stuff with an external preamp for extreme distortion, I'll switch out for the 5751's and pop in the ss rectifier. This works great for speed-picking as it tracks the notes perfectly. "Tracks" is a bad word for it; but, it is the essential idea. Also if you like to do a lot of fast Country triplet pulloffs, the ss works great. It really is a great Head, probably due to the massive transformer. I've driven an Orange 2x12 along with a 4x10 cab with no trouble or excess heat.

Got a pair of NOS GE JAN 5751's and swapped out V1 and V2. What a cool difference. I love that the high end is so much smoother now...almost more musical with my pedal board. I highly recommend this as this thread is helping me achieve tonal nirvana! I have JJ EL 84's on the way...and the JJ Rectifier tube. Thanks everyone! 6Strang

I have a brand new Mazerati head original tubes. I love the clean tones, but when I hit the amp with higher gain pedals I get a very harsh raspy high end. Have any of you experienced this at all?? I am wondering if you found some tubes with a much smoother high to it but still explosive, organic, and still clear? My Maz head and RT66 head handle these overdrive and distortion sounds with a nice silky screamy tone. then I go to my new Mazerati and it seems to hate every higher gain sound I throw at it. I tried a jjGZ34 in rectifier pos, and a EH12ax7, no difference. Don't have any more tubes to try. Would love some more info???

I love 5751's!. I have them in V1, V2, & V5 of my MAZ 38. So much smoother and warmer than the JJ's. Try one of these for your rectifier tube. It really made the amp open up and "breathe" better. And in the long run they're not a lot more than the JJ kcanostubes.com/content/estore_details.asp?product=149
