I've had my EZG 50 for about 6 months now, and not till recently did I really start to bond with the amp. I always knew it was a great sounding amp, but i have really started to enjoy it more lately.
Here are my findings. First of all, the pre and post knobs make the biggest difference in the overall tonality of the amp. Until recently I had never ran the post wide open, But I have gotten some of the best tones by doing that. My tonal advice for this setting is that if you want the evan to give you that black face sound, with doc's little extras, run the post wide open. Use the pre just like a normal volume knob.
Another set of great tones can be achieved by doing the exact oposite. If you run the pre all the way up and use the post as a master volume, it will make a dostortion pedal sound great. I have tried several, and it makes them all sound good. For an amp that has a reputation for being a clean amp, it will really rock if you put a pedal in front of it.
The tones I was getting out of the Evan were always good, but I have really learned a lot lately about how to get what you want out of it. I'm liking this amp more and more as time goes on.
Now that the EZG has been around for a few months I'd be curious to see if anyone has any more thoughs.

I don't have much to add that hasn't allready been said, but I can't imagine ever wanting to trade, sell or do away with it. It's been rare for me to connect w/ a piece of gear on every level the way that I have w/ the ezg. Best money ever spent.

Best money ever spent. i concur. on the whole i have strongly gravitated toward Dr Z amps. first one was the KT-45, then the Maz 18, then the EZG. while i still love the KT and the Maz (and have no intention of selling any of my Z amps), i'd choose the EZG without hesitation if i could only keep one. for my style of playing and personal taste for tone, the EZG is the best amp i have ever owned.

My EZG isn't here yet but I'd like to hear what you guys have experienced with your speaker combinations.
Right now all I will have to use with it with is a Stock Z Best and a 1x12 convertible gold.
I've read that a "premium" choice is a Z 4x10 cab. Also see that the gold will add an english vibe and that a g12-65 is more up its alley.
I'm wondering if I will feel like the amp is hurting with what I currently have and I'm missing out on something.
You know the way people say "you haven't really experienced a StangRay until you try it through a open 2x12 Blue"? Is there an equivalent for the EZG or is it just different spins but all within a good tone zone?

I've had my Evan for a while now When I first got it I did not have the Z 4X10, so I ran it with my Z-Best. At first I didn't bond with the sound; something in my head was telling me that my ears didn't want to hear a "blackface" Fender type head through a closed back ported 2x12 with Celestions. It took me a while but I came to like it with the Z-Best; I just had to re-calibrate my brain's expectations. I had the same "problem" with the Stingray through the Z-Best; I love it through the 2X12 with Blues but the Z-Best had to grow on me. I got the Z 4X10 a few weeks after I got Evan. I really like that combination but the Z 4X10 takes a while to break in. I think it takes even longer than a speaker like a V30 or G12H30. Once it does get a little broken in it sounds great. The EZG has so much bottom end that I run the bass control totally off or just barely on. Even with Strats it sounds huge. I think the EZG sounds great through many speakers. The 4X10 sounds great, but the Z 10" speakers are not exactly copies of vintage Jensens They very much have their own sound. They handle a lot of power and have a great bass response. The mids are very distinctive and the highs are rounder and warmer than a lot of "American" speakers. They have a bolder sound and are quite loud. The Z-Best has a thicker sound than the 4X10 but is more directional. It really makes Teles and Strat bridge pickups sound thick. Because of the V30 it has more upper mid/high end response than the 4X10, so I run the treble control lower with the Z-Best. I guess it just depends on what you're looking for and what your expectations are. If you want the EZG to sound really close like a vintage blackface Super Reverb (but better) you're going to need a 4X10 with some American sounding speakers like a P10R (or similar). The Z 4x10 is *great* but Z's 10" speakers have their own sound- a really good one.
