In groovergeorge earlier response, he mentioned there is rumours Doc will introduce a 6L6 model very soon. Has anyone else heard anything at all about this. Also, will this mod be offered in the MAZ 38 or are we discussing a totally different amp here? Actually, I'm more partial to the 6L6s. Thanks

This is really the start of a different thread entirely, but how different are 6V6 and 6L6 amps?
I have my Fender cleans totally covered with my Meteor II, which is a 6V6 amp (actually, it can take 6L6s also, but I haven't tried it that way). How different is a 6L6 amp tone wise?
What really got me to start this thread was whether I wanted two amps that both used a quad of EL84s. I guess I began wondering how different they could truly be from one another.

Don't go by what output tubes are in the Z amps. They are all quite different regardless of what's in there tubewise. I've played my Maz Sr. right next to buddy's Vox and they are different. You can sorta get the Z to sound like the Vox, but not the other way around. Like other's have stated, it'll do some Matchless, Vox, Marshall and Fender sounds, but with it's own distinctive character. I'm using mine right now with a Z 2X10 cab and a Z 1X12 cab for some huge Fender Super tones. It's amazing how complex the lows and low mids are. This amp is possibly the most versatile that Z makes. I've wanted to look at a Meteor II, that's a very nice amp, but I'm still waiting for my Carr Slant 6V to arrive.

Now for my next question--Why did you guys choose the Sr. over the Jr.? I spoke with Stu earlier today, and he's pretty convinced that the Jr. is all I need. Any thoughts or opinions?

For me, it was all about having a lot of clean headroom if I wanted it. But I'll admit that I haven't played a Jr, I hear that they are amazing amps, but quite different from the Sr. From what I've read the Jr. has more front end and back end distortion than the Sr. I like the Sr, it's a great amp, it holds up to my Bogner Shiva, London, and anything else I've played. It's in a class all it's own, it has a sound that down the road people will be trying to get a Maz Sr. tone the same way people are chasing after different blackface tones IMO. But, you should try and play both the Jr. and the Sr. You'll probably find that you want both! Just as a disclaimer, I love Z amps, but as you can tell I own other amps with varying sounds and degree's of gain and volume. But Z's are very addictive, don't be surprised if you don't end up with a couple of them in the end. And I'll throw another amp into the mix, if you have the opportunity, play a Carmen Ghia, you may just fall in love. I did.

The Jr is more aggressive. Seems to almost continually have an edge/sizzle to it. Compared to the Sr, it has a bigger mid hump - feels more like a low-wattage Marshall. THe Jr has more bite in the treble (rather than chime) and also not near the bass response of the Sr. The Jr is a bit more its own personality/flavor/animal. Really great amp in its own right. The Sr has a bigger tone/frequency range. Full low end, chimey top end. It can do what the Jr does, but not the other way around. Both are really great amps. But, looking at the 2, I'd still get the Sr first - it's much more versatile.

I love my Jr NR, but I don't require a ton of really clean headroom. I have had a Sr and it was a GREAT amp, but I needed an airbrake to get any grind at the levels I was playing at then, now it would be better. The Sr has a fuller stronger low end, BUT with a G12H I run my bass on the Jr at 9:00 so it has PLENTY for me....low end is for the 4 string fellas ;^) I run the mids on up there at 3:00 and everything else about noon, with a dark toned Tele it works for me.
On your 6L6 vs 6V6 question, used in the same amp I feel a more powerful low end with the 6L6's, YMMV. I also own and gig a Z/28 (6V6) with a single Greenback and it smokes too.

I'm hoping to get to a Z dealer tomorrow and play a Sr. and Jr. I doubt they'll have both in a 2 x 12 combo, but, who knows, they might. I should at least be able to get a general sense of which amp I think I'd prefer. I'm also going to bring a bunch of pedals and see if either amp responds to them better. Will definitely check back in upon my return! One could do a lot worse than spend an afternoon testing out Z amps.

All his amps like pedals, you won't be disappointed.

hey guys, im the new guy here...so i hear many references to "the essential" mods to an ac30cc. I have one and have been thinking of undertaking some mods. can someone list as many of them as possible and their effects on tone (as well as which are "essential" and which are not). currently, my set up is an ac30ccx (2 blues).
ps. im really not interested in someone flaming me with things like "why are you modding it, why didn't you get X amp instead, if it ain't made n' 'merica, i ain't touchin' it"
