Hi Folks Can anyone enlighten me as to the differences between the Route 66 and the KT45?
I know the 66 is UL and the Z28 has a choke. What about the 45?
I play in a band that covers Free and Bad Company songs and I'm looking to find the Best Z amp to cover that, plus I'm way too much of a tech head as far as amps go to not wanna know how my sound is generated!
It amazes me how the good Doc gets such different tones and responses from essentially the same circuit!
Cheers Shane

Shane, I've never played a Z28, but I own a Route 66 and just sold a KT45. The KT and the R66 have a very strong family resemblance. In a nutshell, the KT has a bit more clean headroom, while the 66 sounds a little "bigger" and creamier in the distortion. I did have pretty much identical preamp and rectifier tubes in them, NOS Mullard across the board. For power tubes, I was using a set of GT KT66HPs in the R66, and a set of EH 6CA7s in the KT. I've also read that using a solid state rectifier in the KT makes a difference. But switching between the two heads by using a Radial Headbone into the same cabinet, the two amps sounded very, very close. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either amp for classic rock. I was jamming on my Les Paul through the Route 66 today. Instead of the 212 I normally play through, I ran into a Greenback-loaded Marshall 412. It sounded really great. HTH, Brad

Oh Man!!!! As much as I'd love to, I've never played a KT45, BUT when I first played the Route 66 I immediately thought of Kossoff. If you are playing Free or Bad Company, the 66 will eat it up. Trust me, I play both these bands in a cover band also.

well thanks alot Phil! Now you've got me gassin' 6545 again!!!!!
With my 66 and 1-12 cab/humbuckers, I sometimes run out of clean headroom. I Bet the KT45 and 66 would be a great A/B rig.

No doubt Jaye, the 66/45 would be a killer two amp rig. ;D

I think the hot ticket would be a 6545 and the upcoming Stang GT run through a Radial Headbone into a ZBest. How's that for versatility?

I have both amps. Most of my observations have been covered above. Personally, for RHYTHM guitar breakup tones I prefer the breakup of the KT. BUT, the 66 will get you closer to the tones of Free and Bad Company. The 66 will break up at a lower volume - another plus for Free/Bad Co. rhythm parts. So, that's the way I'd go for your band.
