I got a MAZ 38 about a month ago and it had the small Accutronics Type 8, 3 spring tank. I used it for awhile, but I never really liked the tone...a bit too bright with the Fender "boing" sound. It was also extremely susceptible to vibrations, causing the infamous reverb "crash" on a number of different wooden stages.
I just upgraded to a Type 9, 6 spring tank at the cost of $40.00 direct from Accutronics. This tank has a darker, thicker verb and is less susceptible to vibrations.
This is an EASY job to do for anybody who can use a screwdriver and you don't need any electronics experience. The important issue is to know how to determine the specs for the new tank and that's very easy too.
Remove the tank from the bag and find the 7 digit number inked on the metal. Go to this link www.accutronicsreverb.com/prodspec.htm and check the explanation of this 7 digit number. You can also call and they'll help you determine what replacement tank to order.
The stock tank had a long decay, but I ordered my Type 9 with a medium decay. This is the same tank that came stock with my Bogner Shiva, so I had an idea of what it sounded like before I ordered.
My MAZ came with a long reverb bag, so it fit the new tank perfectly. The stock tank is wired simply with 2 RCA cables. Just unplug them from the old tank and insert into the new one, keeping track of which one is in & out. Simple and no soldering required.
The Type 9 needs more of a signal than the Type 8, so you have to turn up the reverb level knob more to get a comparable wet sound.
I'm not certain, but I think the Type 9 is what Z used to use. My old MAZ had a long tank with the same sound and I remember having the reverb knob set at the same levels.
Do a Google search on the web for reverb tanks and you'll get a ton of great info.
