I have only spent about an hour with my Galaxie, about half an hour each with a Les Paul and a Stratocaster. I have barely gotten up to about 10 on either Volume so far. I can hear Joe Walsh all over this. Later tonight I listened to some James Gang and solo Joe. It is almost spooky. I do not have the vocabulary a lot of you guys use to disect sound so I am going to just throw some adjectives out there.
Channel 1 is a melodic crystal clear ring-a-bell complex chord overtone nirvana. Channel 1 is Midnight Man but way better. I am a Gibson guy, always have been. When I plugged my Strat in and hit a few chords on Channel 1, I smiled like I have never smiled before with a Strat in my hands.
Channel 2 is... loud. Channel 2 is a double barreled magnum blast of rock 'n roll on afterburner in your face. Channel 2 is Joe Walsh playing The Bomber and The Confessor live with an amp that *starts* at 11. All remorse over not buying an SRZ65 is gone now, slagged and blasted away by Channel 2. Channel 2 is like chasing shots of tequila with flaming shots of tequila.
Do you name your gear? I think my Galaxie is about to be named Battlestar Galactica.
Thanks Joe. Thanks Mike. Thanks Midtown Music.

I've been looking for a Srz alternative, this sounds pretty good. ;D I have both a 6545 and a Galaxie head. They are pretty different. Hard to articulate the difference, but the SRZ is more like a great overdrive - powerful amp, while the Galaxie channel 2 is more like big muff fuzz/overdrive feel (in summary, Galaxie great for solo's, SRZ great for crunching cords).. My 2 cents.

Definately not hearing any of this fuzz you are talking about...I greatly dislike muffs, they are congested with a flubby low end, my galaxie is very articulate with a tight low end...Tubes??

Nice message Jan. Perfect descriptions! The Galaxie is a great tone machine. What was the Galaxie ambassador's (TRock) quote, "From Chet to Chains pedal killer" come to mind.
Taz it's good so see/hear from you.

I definitely am getting fuzz out of my Galaxie Channel 2. My guess is that the difference is with the MV mod amps, where the presence knob was permanently set at 12. At 12 it's pretty gnarly but not fuzzy. When my present is set above 12 it starts to get fuzzy. When you hit 3 it's Jimi's tone for Dolly Dagger - smooth creamy fuzz. You get that same fuzz tone from both the Monza and the Maz GT - the more the volume is turned past noon the fuzzier things get!

If you Bastiches are getting "Fuzz"(yuk) outta yer Galaxie...... you 'aint go it set rite. It was designed to emulate a low powered Tweed Super.
Tweed Supers, DON'T do "Fuzz"(YUK!). And yes... I take offense @ that "Fuzz" reference, when it comes to Galaxie tone. Shame on you.
A total of TWO songs that I like come to mind when I here the term "Fuzz".
1. Spirit in the Sky(Speaker cut w/a razor blade) 2. Satisfaction(Dallas Arbitor Fuzz Face....Used unmercifully for decades afterwards)
The End.

Purple Haze??? Man you are tough Tone!!! OK...... Let me clarify. The two songs I listed, are "my" idea of "Fuzz" tone. Yeah, I have an early 70's Big Muff Pi. And yeah, I absoLUTEly wore it out thru a Marshall. BUT.......... I used it(mainly because it was the ONLY thing on the market @ the time) as an OD/solo boost, waaaay B/4 there WAS an OD pedal. "Fuzz", to my ear, is just obscene, nasty noise. Remember the Huey Lewis song, "I want a new Drug"? There was a line in there summers, about a nephew/cousin (or some sh!t)..."Plays guitar, sounds like a chainsaw buzzin' "..... I "think" that was the song I'm "sorta" be-memberin'. THAT description, is my interpretation of "Fuzz". I have less than zero, use for that tone(anymore). I WILL concede 2 more tunes to that tone(after MUCH consideration). 3. American Woman 4. Journey to the Center of your Mind That's IT!! Four......dammit!!

I'm a little lost here, not sure what you guys are on about. I crank all my amps up til they fuzz - distort. If they ain't fuzzing, then I ain't happy. I think my Galaxie gets a ton o' fuzz, starts with the volume cranked to about 1 o'clock and goes up from there. I use a Z Brake to get the volume I want. No pedals. Use my guitars volume knob to determine how much fuzz I want while I play, and gets a great semi-clean sound for rhythm by backing down on the guitar volume. Always play through channel 1.
Funny, I used to own a Tweed Super, the low powered 6V6 one - really clean almost new looking specimen. Never liked the sound of it, as much as I tried - was too thin and when pushed to fuzz, it sounded like preamp overdrive - was not to my liking. I kept it a few years trying to love it but it never happened, so I sold it. And I'm an avid tweed Fender fan - have like 10 of 'em, one of most models. Only ones I don't have are a Champ or a Super or a big powered Twin. So I know their tones purty dern well. But the Galaxie sounds WAY better than the Super I had. Great low end, great tonal variation. Tonally, I think of the Gal as a mix of all these tweeds, not like any particular one of them. But certainly better than that Super I had. Don't miss that amp at all. Funny, that Super sounded great through other cabinets. But I don't wanna play those kinda amps through other cabs, wanna play the original!

also funny, I hardly play those amps these days, nearly always plug into a z. hmmmm.
