I went through 8 differant speakers in my Maz 38 112 combo and my 112 ext cab before finding my tone. everything I heard sounded compressed to me. I ended up putting a Tonkor in the combo and a Swamp Thang in the ext cab, I wanted to be able to pop my big E tring on my Nocaster and it sound like a low note on a grand piano. Im there!!!!!!

thanks for the reply, yes both of them. not enough head room for me. Weber Blue dog , Silver Bell , both 50w Alnicos, SRO EV, EV Force. and several other speakes Dave at Avatar sent me. I hope not everyone thinks the only speaker for the Z is Celestion . they might miss out. the Eminence Line I think is what I was looking for.

I'm not missing out because the Celestions are exactly what I'm looking for

Wow, I was just looking at Avatar... I'm really interested in the Avetar G12H30 paired with a G12 Vintage 30. I'm wondering how that is going to sound? Bluzesteel, did you try that particular Avatar cabinet?
If you've found what you like in the Eminence line, can you make some mp3's and post or email em? I'm at that point where I'm going to start looking for speakers for the MAZ SR Head... You may be able to help others who are at this cross road. :-)

give me a few days and I'll try to come up with some clips , my new CD should be out in a few days and I used the Z on some of the tunes . no I didn't use the Avatar cab , Dave sells me speakers. although if I were looking for one{a cab} he has the best price out there. the main reason I settled with the Tonkor and Swamp was due to all the other ones I tried sounded compressed to me. I live hear in FT Worth and Buddy W and I play gigs from time to time and I'm pretty sure he has a EV 100 watt in his combo. he told me the other day he was gonna try a Tonkor as well. its just so hard to get clean headroom from a 30 watt speaker{G12H30 } a higher watt speaker works for me , but we play pretty loud. if I was playing at the house , or in church a 30 to 50 watt might work . after a outdoor concert one day I found myself looking back at my amp saying " it anit working" and I am not going to put my guitar in the monitors, that really sounds like Sh..t. so Dave at Avatar and a few others on the gear page told me to check into the Tonkor{175 watt} and on a wild hair I put the Swamp in the ext cab. I want it as clean as I can get it on the front end because I assure you when I turn it up its gonna scream and at low volumes it sounds great as well.
I forgot to tell you if I had a Z head I would look into a ZBest 212 for sure , then the 30 watts work real well because of the closed back

The Zbest might be a good idea... do you know what model speakers he throws in them or is it whatever I want? Look foward to hearing your disk...

My 2 12" MAZ Sr has two Webers. Both 50 watt, and both ceramic....A Blue Dog and Silver Bell. Big, fat sound. Nice top end, but not shrill. Really give the amp some "huff" when pushed. Between all the Weber and Celestion models, it should be pretty easy to find exactly the voicing you're after.

I tried the Weber Blue and Silver Alnico 50 watt and they didnt work ,I assume the ceramic would have had a better punch.

I believe Buddy uses a Celestion G12H/100 w speaker in both his Z-1x12 cab, & his Maz-38 1x12 combo. He has the standard G12H 30w, Vin -30 combination in his Z-Best.

Dr Z often reaches for the H100 when headroom is primary. Michael Burks uses ZBest's with H100's.
Sounds like the Tonker and swamp thing make for a cool combo with some american spank! Dr Z over the years has used all kinds of speakers.. in the early years he would often have SRO's, Alteks and JBL's re-coned for use in his combo's for players wanting the cleaner tones.

Hey Perry. might say I do the TONKSWAMP. I do like them alot. did Z ever check out the Tonkor ? he thought it sounded intresting. Z and I talked about getting more headroom and I found an SRO coffee can ,oh man heavy. but it didnt sound good to me, might have needed a recone , it was the original cone. Im real happy with the pair I have now. would also like to try the Texas Heat sometime. never been much for the British tone . most of my heros played american amps.......... well there was Hendrix! I might end up with a Z Best with Tonkswamp

After listening to the sound clips and doing a/b's... I think the Eminence sound better than the Celestions. Of course it all depends on what amps they used etc... But the sound of the eminence clips were much better. The Celestions all had that 70's/80's metal sound.
The three Eminence sound clips that really got my attention were the Tonker, the Sampthang and the Texas Heat. I think a cab with a Tonker and Swamp Thang would sound great.
My question is how do folks feel about 150watt speakers for a 38 watt head? It seems to me a lower wattage speaker would break up a little quicker and give you some nice grit. Is there too much headroom with a 150watt speaker?
What do you all think?

I think I shall go with the TonkSwamp mix. What is nice is Avetar makes a TonkSwamp cab at a really nice price!!!! :-) I don't see how anyone can go wrong with that!
Also, because of this BBS, I found out about Lava Cables... I contacted Mark and had him make a nice 16 gauge Y-cable to go from DRZ to two small 1x12 Marshall Cabs I have... Those cabs have some old Heritage 70's in them. Having a couple of different rigs gives me options.
Now all I need is my DRZ to come in... I think I have another 4 or 5 weeks to go before that comes in...

So, we've gone into a lengthy discussion about different speakers... what about the cab itself.
The Z-Best are nice cabs.. look well constructed, but can the good Doctor install a TonkSwamp mix instead of Celestion?
I've looked at the Avatar stuff, I've read the reviews, but I'm not sure of the construction quality. I've seen some folks on posts discussing that you pretty much get what you pay for and the quality of the box itself has a lot less to be desired. Customer service reviews were great...
I'm actually talking with a custom furniture maker in the North East about making a 2x12 cabinet. I'ts not her forte as she's a fine custom furniture maker, I just can't find anything out there that is decent for the price.
I mean, how much is there to it? You need a 3/4 birch ply box right? A few wholes drilled for speakers and hardware, some tolex, and a cloth grill, some electronics and we're done right? (speakers of course)... How hard can this be?
I know what speakers I want, I just can't find a box to put them in! Any suggestions?

Zane, I guess I'll email the Doctor for a quote on a Z-best with the Eminence speakers. I appreciate the input into the Avatar cabs...
