Ok, so I'm totally devoted to my Rt66... set for a bit of over drive with a fuzz for heavier stuff it's perfect for me.... BUT... recently I've really been intrigued by the idea of adding a kt45 to AB with the 66.
Here's what I'm thinking...
- Set the kt up for a kinda vox-like clean with a touch of grit and use that for cleaner tones, rolling down the volume for the 100% clean tones when necessary.
- Set the 66 up with with a little more overdrive, but still relatively clean, using an overdrive pedal to boost it when I want a bit more, and a fuzz to hit it when I want a ton more, and using that for all my dirty/heavy tones.
- Use an AB switch so I can go from cleaner grit to slight overdrive/medium overdrive/thick fuzz goodness, or maybe even some cool blends of all of those with both amps on.
- Use an attenuator on both so I don't go deaf.
Sounds cool right? I think so, but I do have some concerns.
1: Breakup - I've never been able to play a KT, although I definitely want to whether I by one or not. How far up the vol dial do you start getting grit with the tone controls up? Would I have to crank it pretty high to get pretty close even with the tone controls maxed? I want a pretty clean tone, but not a 100% pure clean tone... if that makes any sense. (BTW, I play humbuckers almost exclusively, so take that into account)
2: Volume differences - I play my 66 through a Z's best, so it's definitely loud, but the KT is probably louder from what I've read on this forum. Will I have problems matching the volume levels? I'd like the cleaner tone to be about the same volume as the base slightly overdriven 66 tone. Might I be able to compensate with speakers? I was originally thinking of another Z's best for the KT, but I'm also thinking an open back 2x12 would be cool.
This idea is still in the planning stages and probably will be at least until next year, but it's definitely something I'm kicking around and thought I'd ask for some feedback.
What do you think? Bad idea? Or the best idea ever?
Oh... BTW you may be wondering why I'm not considering some of the el84 amps (specifically the Stangray) if I'm digging those "voxy" cleans... I don't know really. I'm just not really feeling the those amps right now for some reason. The KT really sparks my interest though, hence why I posted this here.
Thanks, any feedback, thoughts, ideas, comments etc. are appreciated.
