I really like my Maz 38. Currently using an open back 2x12 with G12H30's. The best over Fender and Vox in one box I'm waiting on a Z best for it and also plan to buy a Route 66 this summer

I saw Buddy Whittington play a couple years ago,& loved his tone. I ordered a Maz-38 NR shortly after. It was a 1x12 purty red combo. I loved it ,it was a great amp...but...realy more power than I needed....so....I sold it. Wish I had it back

Hey JChance..................
Any chance that you are Jason Chance from the Gainesville, GA area. If so we have a friend in common.
If not, sorry to bother you.
A good friend of mine, Lee Davis, has worked with a Jason Chance. Lee played keys in my band for several years. Lee is supposed to be working with Ty Herndon right now. I suppose you are too?
BTW..... My MAZ 38SR really cooks..... the vintage Fender stuff can't keep up. They stay at home. Mine is a red 1x12 with reverb.

That's me....sort of....LOL I'm from Nashville originally (one of the few, it seems! LOL), but grew up between Nashville and Atlanta. I worked with Lee Davis a lot when I was down there, and helped get him the Ty Herndon gig recently when Ty was looking for a piano player. Lee's a great player and a great dude..... No, I'm not working with Ty right now, except on occasion when he needs me. Good guy, and I had a lot of fun in the couple of years I spent as guitar/bandleader I with him. Great singer. I still see him around town and help him out with finding players when he needs them. I'm mainly concentrating on session work and occasional road dates with different artists. Have we met before?

Yes, we have met, but it's been a while.
I think it was about the time that my last (before the current) bass player, Alan Grindel, started working with you and Lee. I can't remember what the name of the band was.. I think y'all were playing in Gainesville.
Maybe that's where I am coming up with the Gainesville connection.
Lee is one the best guys I have ever worked with and known in music. Anyone is lucky to have him. I have some recordings that are simply amazing.

I have one of those purty red Maz 38 combos. Mostly I use my Maz 18, but I had an outdoor gig recently, with the wind blowing right at me. I had that 38 cranked. I was glad to have the power.

esoteric pete....
That Maz Sr. come in yet? I'm curious because I was thinking of maybe trying to organize a little Z amp tone fest. Assuming that there are enough people in our area. Just a thought...

I love my Maz 38. It has taken the place of my Super Reverb. Yep .... you can cover a lot of tonal bases with the MAZ 38 including a BF Super Reverb if you plug it into an open back 4x10 cab. I generally use mine with a Z-best cab though: and generally play it with strats more than with the LP shown here.

I have a Maz 38 NR Head - I'm still playing with it and exploring it's tones. Very versatile. I'm interested in the setting used by others Maz folks to get certian tones. What settings are your fav's? Also, if you own 2 Maz's, what your other Maz.
Thanks

you might be glad you have a 1/12, my wheat grilled 2/12 is extremely heavy, that is my only gripe. fine fine versatile amp though, changin out the V-1 tube gives a lot of variety in tone. want to trade, hah? just get a 2/12 cab or other, probably get the same sound .avatar makes cabs with the same spkrs that dr z uses. check them out at avatar speakers.com. i am not affiliated with them at all, just have one of their cabs.. a good buy.

cementman, I was thinking of saving some weight when I decided on the single 12 model but it weighs nearly as much as my twin anyway! I have thought about getting an ext cabinet...I just havent gotten around to it. I think 2 12's might give me a little more depth to my sound but heck it sounds great the way it is. I should experiment with the V1 tube more...I have replaced it already but I bet I could really improve the sound with a different tube.

Hi, new here, just found out about this place.
My Maz38 112 is due to arrive Wensday the 22nd.
The waiting is the hardest part.
I'll be playing a Brian Moore 21.13 and a Mex Strat through the Senior.
Still looking for a good overdrive/distortion/fuzz to use with it, a Barber Direct Drive seems to be a good choice for overdrive?

Hey esoteric pete and kaseri! I'm from MA/NH area... I plan on ordering a MAZ 38 Sr - Non Rev head from Boston Guitar today... I'm so excited! Hey esoteric, how was your experience ordering from them? Are they shipping it to you or do you have to go into Brocton to get it? Did they give you an estimage on when it would come in or shipping charges?
I would immagine that since I'm ordering it, I could probably specify color huh? If so, I can't decide on a brunette, red head, or blond... :-) I'm leaning towards the brunette just because it will match the Marshall it will be sitting next to and cut down on showing dirt and skuff, although a blonde would be nice :-).
Hey kaseri, I'm all up for local Z owners getting together... that would be pretty cool...
TTYL!

Hi. New to the board. Bought a used 38 Sr 112. Arrives early next week!! (No worries, Good Doctor: I'll be buying a cab or two and once I work out this amp, I'm sure I'll be buying a new one from you! And I will definitely turn my friends onto these amps!)
I am having night sweats waiting to play this thang!
Quick questions: 1) I heard this amp goes through tubes faster than your standard production amps. Is this true, or just rumor? and 2) Where do folks purchase their replacement tubes from?
Thanks and hoping to contribute more to the community once my SR gets here! Oooo Oooo, hurry sundown!

Nice LP myles.. makes me remember my old 71 or 72 SG Custom. Should have never let that one go.... Thanks. I have quite a few LPs. I wish I had an SG Std or Custom. I guess I had that guitar out for something when I took the photo but I generally play a strat with the MAZ 38. Maybe since most of my strats are sunburst and pretty pedestrian looking I picked a guitar with a color contrast. That is about as far as my limited photographic skills can range.

I went thru 2 sets of powertubes the first year I had my Z...I emailed the Dr about it and he had me check a couple things...then he sent me a set of tubes that he had tested himself(free of charge I might add)...those lasted right at a year. Where to buy tubes? Ive bought from different places...once was a local pawn shop when I needed some ASAP...and Musicians Friend...hopefully others will chime in with their recommendations.

Two sets of output tubes in a year is actually pretty good. I like to replace the output sets every 300 hours. You will notice a difference.
I prefer EL84S #6 or #5's in this amp.
