That's not an attenuator, it's a master volume control, and there is no way it will do the same thing. It controls the preamp level before it hits the power amp, thus no power tube saturation can ever be a part of that distortion. I used to do things this way with a box of my own design, but I realized that just preamp distortion wasn't what I wanted. A real attenuator like the Airbrake lowers the volume AFTER the power tubes, so you can get them into the tone equation.
By the way, I really doubt this thing would even work in it's advertised mode for some Z amps. My Stingray for example isn't a true series loop, which is a requirement for this doodad to do its thing.

Those only work in effects loop and you don't get the power tube grind, just pre-amp. It's just a volume control, I think if you hooked it up to a speaker out it wouldn't work or would damage your amp.

You can do the same thing with just about any effects pedal. Put the pedal in the EFX Loop, and turn the Effect's Level down.
It can be a very useful technique. But, it's not the same as an Attenuator.

I tried one of these on my JCM800 100w combo as I could barely turn it on at home without the police arriving shortly afterwards! No good at all, all the tone from the power tubes is sucked out even with the amp on 11. Just the same as turning down the master. Pointless.
