Hello Everyone - This is my first post so Greetings from Wales U.K. I am a proud owner of a Maz 18 NR 2x10 Combo and they are very rare over here. Gearheads know them but I have never seen anyone else use one so mine always provokes comment at gigs - which is nice.
I changed the power tubes about 6 months back and thougt I would change the pre-amp tubes last week. I ordered what I thought were the correct tubes and fitted these but the result was a huge reduction in volume and clean headroom. When I replaced the original tubes the amp returnded to its former glory so I checked the new tubes to see if they matched. The pair of ECC83s I had replaced were ECC832 and not ECC83S as originally installed.
If I seem a technophobe that is because I am - but can anyone tell me if I ordered the wrong tubes or why there is such a difference when they look identical?
Cheers

Hey Gretschman, this tube is a hybrid, basically a 12DW7, essentially lower gain. Ive copied some info for you. If it gets you nice tone at lower volume and thats something you need, then its safe and cool. All in your ears tho, Cheers mate.
From Bob at Eurotubes site.. "If your trying to cut the gain in your amps drive channel you might be interested in a hybrid tube I'm using in my Prosonic and 5150 to cut the gain, it's called the JJ ECC832 which is a 12DW7. This tube is half of an ECC83S ( 12AX7 ) and half of an ECC82 ( 12AU7 ). I one of them in my Prosonic in V2. This actually sounds VERY nice in amps that cascade the gain through several preamp tubes. It cuts down the gain by about 40% but retains a nice crisp attack and warm tone where just dropping down to a 12AT7 seems to dull the tone a bit. I've got lots of players using the ECC832 in one or two of the gain stages in everything from the Mesa Triaxis to Peavey Triple X amps with great results. "

Hey Thank you so much - I thought I was losing it but at least the sound I describe matches your own description of what the tube should do!!
So my grey matter may be a bit challenged but the old ears are working.
Cheers!!
