Is the Raytheon 12ax7 JAN 1960 a good tube to use in V1 or does anyone have any other recomendations? What I don't like is real high mids and high trebles. I like to get the warmest sound possible.
Please recomend tube other than a $200 mullard.

DC here!
I have a lightly used Telefunken ECC83/12AX7 you can by from me. 50$ I suspect it's NOT a true diamond bottom - it is from the mid 1970. PM me if you want more info - or if you're interested.
That would indicate that it was actually made by Siemens - still one of the best tubes avaliable. I cannot vouch for it's warmth ask Myles about that - I susepct that Telefunkens are more neutral in character - just a guess.
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

This happens to be my favorite 12AX7 for just about anything. When Aspen Pittman came to me a half a dozen years ago and said .... "if you could recreate any 12AX7 ever made what would you pick?" I picked the Raytheon ... it is smooth, articulate and not muddy and has great high end without being too bright. Anyway ... he was the owner of the company and picked to re-make the 12AX7M ... the Mullard ... one of my least favorite tubes but it was his company

I have a couple of Raytheon Blackplates in my Maz 18 NR and they sound great. I like them in this amp better than my Telefunken Smoothplates.

I had a mullard in my V1 position and a raytheon in the phase inverter but myles thinks the Raytheon would be better in V1.
Now I don't have a PI tube : (

Myles,
You being a guru, why don't you hear people holding the Raytheons in such high regards as the Mullards ect.
I'm with you I always loved the Raytheon, But all the Mullard hype made me get one.

Does anyone know the difference in sound between the grey plates and the black plates?

Don't forget V2- you can do some great mix'n'match. I like my GE and Brimar 12AX7's in V1 and in V2 I mix between a Mexican NOS RCA 12BH7 and a JAN NOS 5751 in V2. The 5751 rolls off some of the treble and the 12BH7 is quite even. Nice options in the Ghia. Brett

Does anyone know the difference in sound between the grey plates and the black plates? There is an interesting bit of info on this that has to do with corrosion control of plate material but bottom line here is that there is actually no difference functionally. If you call me sometime I will explain it as it is a long piece of info and you can write it up if you wish. It is something of folklore that has grown over the years and has more to do with other prooduction issues and the design of the tube at the time of the blackplates more than the color of the material itself. So Myles, is this true of the 6L6 as well? I was just gifted a pair of NOS RCA black plates. I hear they are the holy grails. ...now I just need the amp they go in...

Black plates are made by carborizing the plate material as in hitting them with amonia when they are hot before they are turned into plates. No sonic difference but they will sound great, last a very long time and are a great gift. And ... since 99.9995% of folks believe there is a difference they will always be very pricy.

Thanks Myles. My father is an old tube guy (electrical engineer - and did TV and radio repair on the side). Apparently he has hundreds stockpile in the garage and periodically sends me things he thinks I might be able to use. I sent him Dave Hunters tube amp book and he is fascinated by both the rabid interest in tubes and the value of this stuff.
