Myles,
Doug recommends the JAN Phillips 12AT7 for reverb driver and phase inverter in blackface style amps and Mike recommends the Mullard 4024. The Mullard is twice as expensive as the Phillips. Do you think its worth it? I was also curious how many hours do you think either of these would last in a 35 watt 6L6 circuit. I'm thinking I should stock up on enough to last me until I am old.
Thanks, Jason

Thanks, Jason Jason, The JAN Philips made in 1987 and earlier are pretty decent tubes but the Mullard is a superior tube. Sort of like comparing a Honda Accord (nice car) to a BMW 5 series. Both about the same size and type of car but not in the same league. I have a number of clients using the Mullards in reverb drivers and phase inverters and to my ears, even in those positions it makes a difference. The Mullard in the PI position breaks down very smoothly. The Philips gets harsh when driven into distortion and it's current capability falls off much more sharply than the Mullard. The Mullard will have a much longer life than the Philips ... at least three times longer as very high grade materials were used and their QA and QC was very high. Pushing a duet of 6L6s the Mullard will probably exceed 10,000 hours of hard use pretty darn easily. If the tube went two times that long it would not surprise me at all. The Philips could fail due to microphonics or breakdown before the output tubes were due for replacement (about 6,000 hours in average use for the 6L6s in a <50 watt circuit) If the phase inverter did not fail from gas shorts or heater to cathode leakage I would not go longer than replacing it or having it checked every other output tube change at the most.

Myles,
Thank you very much for the advice. I will get the Mullards and a few extra for replacement. That ought to last me a life time. Are you going to start a tube company now that your leaving GT?

I am not starting a tube company as there is really no need. There are some great folks out there that I work with who will be able to support my friends and clients at a very high level when it comes to tube requirements.
