I recently saw what appeared to be a red tolex Mazerati combo amongst an AC30 and a Vibroking in the backline of aussie country artist Adam Harvey during a festival that was in the snowy mountains ski fields. I couldn't work out who was playing it but if anyone here has any info it would be appreciated.

My Mazerati is one killer sounding amp! Definitely my favorite and probably one of the last ones built before the production ended!
Can't say enough good things about the Mazerati, I own several Z amps and always come back to the Rati!

I love mine as well!! It's my 2nd favorite amp in the Z line up. Just got a Weber Blue (alnico) in mine, and it's gone up a few notches in ranking.

Didn't you have a Fang in there? How does the Blue compare to the Fang, now that you've heard them in the same cab?

Hey Jason, I use the Blue Dog with mine alot, works good with it! I also like it alot with my 2x12 loaded with english made Greenbacks.
The Silverbell I got from you works great with the Rx original strength, tames the highs a bit and adds some lows.
I tried the Bluedog and Silverbell in a 2x12 cab togather and didn't really care for it, the Greenbacks however Rock!!!!!!!

Didn't you have a Fang in there? How does the Blue compare to the Fang, now that you've heard them in the same cab? Yep, I had a Red Fang in there before I put the Weber blue in there. I'll start by saying, the Red Fang is a GREAT speaker but the Weber Blue sounds better to my ears (maybe because it's blue?) ;D. It's a 50wt blue (8ohms), it's a tad bit smoother sounding in the mids and has a tad bit more highs, but they are smooth highs.... it also seems to have a few more lows when I ran my Stangray through it 2 weekends ago. I also noticed it's less "boxy" sounding than the Red Fang, although the Red Fang really isn't a "boxy" sounding speaker, thats just the mid freq that the blue tames. I highly recommend either speaker in this amp, but if you have the extra $45, go for the Weber Blue (now $195 new).

The Rati has always been an amp that intrigues me. It was originally designed to be a big brother to the Ghia. Is that a fair comparison? I mean is it really a Ghia with more horsepower? How does the original Rati compare to the new GT version? I know the GT is supposed to be a high gain design, but to me the Ghia does high gain. So, I would assume that the original Mazerati would also do high gain. Sorry for all these questions, but I am trying to ascertain what makes the GT so much different from the original.

I'm gonna answer without every playing a Ghia or a GT.... The first generation of the Mazerati was a higher powered Ghia, but the 2nd generation was re-voiced and given a stronger transformer and more clean headroom. The GT starts breaking up around 2 or 3 on the volume, the regular Mazerati doesn't even get any hair on it until about half way up on the volume with a 12ax7 preamp V1 and not until about 7 on the volume with a 12at7.
The Ghia gets in to power tube breakup much quicker due to it only being 18wts, where the Rati is approx double that, so it's a pretty powerful amp.
- With a standard Mazerati at almost full volume, you get maybe Tubescreamer level of overdrive.
- With the Mazerati GT just over half volume, Marshall JCM800's and Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers start getting worried.... yeah, there's that much gain.... and with the gain, VOLUME.

Was the green tolex available on the earlier versions of the 'Rati, or the later versions?

I'm pretty sure green tolex versions of the Ghia and Mazerati were early production models but I may be wrong.

Green tolex was very early on, The Mazerati from that time period was considered a double powered Ghia!
I like the later model with more headroom and less gain , I consider these the perfect gigging amp for me!

I'll second that thought Dave...I got a 2/10 combo a while back and love it. Now, I'll add a bit to telejas thoughts since I do own both a Ghia and a Rati... To me the Rati is a darker amp...the Ghia is very...well, not necesarily bright but I'll say "sparkly/chimey"...much moreso than the Rati and because of this there are some occasions where I can run the Rati at 3oclock just fine but the Ghia at Noon would have people complaining...weird but its true. I'll also add the disclaimer that I run my Ghia through Weber Blue/SIlver Ceramics and the Rati through Weber Alnico Blues right now. Dave...you still running your Rati through a Tonker? Did you ever run it through a ceramic Blue? I thinking about removing one of my blues and replace it with a ceramic speaker for a little more headroom but still have that alnico growl along with it.
