For an amp intended for cleans, why include a master?

what about a 1-15" with an EZG 50?

Who said it was intended for cleans? ;D Quotes in the description like, "The EZG-50 has a very definitive 6L6 clean sound." and " With 50 watts of clean power, 2 knob reverb, and a tube rectifier, the EZG-50 is the blackface head that never was" it just seems like the Doc is famous for "fewest knobs when you die, wins" kind of designs. That's all. ;D

If it was just about anyone other than Phil, I'd likely dismiss a "Who said it was intended for cleans?" comment, but me thinks he knows sumthin'.

i've been pondering this for a couple of days since seeing the inital post. to be honest, i haven't come up with a good hypothesis. rather than attempt to sound smart (and look dumb), i'll await a response from someone who knows what they are talking about. i'm sure we'll get a definitive answer at some point.
i will say this, however... the fact there is a master volume doesn't discourage me one bit from totally GASing for this new Z.

Have you ever heard a Fender Pro Reverb or Vibroverb kranked up...it is a wonderful sound at lower volumes.

Well that is a good question.
I have always found that a good sounding say Super Reverb had a sweet spot around volume 4 and 5. Right there the notes bloomed stayed articulate but got some complexity in the way of second, third, and forth order harmonics. Even order from the triode pre-amp and odd order from the tetrode 6L6's. But for most applications this was just too loud.
So with Pre and Post controls you can drive the front-end or the back-end a have a wider sweet spot, with a rich thick clean and less overall volume.
Also the pre-control helps pedals optimize there drive.
I added the two reverb controls to answer the demand for various reverb tones. Some like thicker Fender like reverb ala **** Dale, while others like more subtle natural room reverb ala Ampegs Dimension. These two controls work on the length of the Reverb Tail ( Dwell ) and the amount of Effect ( Mix ) allowing for the most possibilities .

KC, I didn't mean to imply that I had any inside knowledge or anything. I haven't beta-tested the EZG-50 (I wish). I was just saying that knowing the Doc, it'll be very versatile and have great breakup as well as a stellar clean tone. I can't wait to hear Evan with my new Grosh next month!!!

I'm glad that the ezg 50 has a pre/post configuration. I really can't wait to hear one in june. Docs master volumes work so well on all the amps that have them. I bet the pre/post setup on evan will be more of the same attention to detail that all of his amps have had. I bet the reverb on this amp will be really sweet too.
I'm really gassing for a new amp this year. maybe this will be the one.

I still have my old '68 Fender Dual Showman cabinet with 2- 15" D130's out in the garage. Haven't used it since about 1972 or so. Maybe an EZG-50 would be the perfect head for it. Hmmm... MeZa

I think having a master control works very well. Think of the Maz line up... I should have married rich; nahh... I grew up poor. How poor was I? We were so poor we had to poop in the bath tub just to have tub toys! OK that's gross but I've been holding on to that one for a while waiting to use it.

Wow. Can I send my Galaxie in to get that pre/post master volume upgrade?
I am tempted to add a smiley, but I am sort of serious. Yea, I know... the upgrade *is* the EZG.

Here is my latest two cents for this thread.
I played the one at Zfest and the volume knobs work great together. If you dial the pre volume low and the post high you get this nice chimy sound, very black face like. if you wind up the pre you get a great cranked blackface sound, and even with the post turned down you get a nice thick 6L6 sound.
I played one at the Jam though a 4x10 cab. Played a strat straight into the amp. Pre was cranked, post maybe 10:00. worked the volume on my guitar. it gave me great lead tone cranked up, and roll off the volume a touch and it really had a nice clean sparkle.
great reverb too.
I think it is a great amp.

MeZa Could be pretty spectacular but if the speakers have not been used in a few decades you are probably in for some reconing not to mention dust and spider removal. The speaker surround is probably history and the voice coil might be fused via corrosion t the voice coil gap. These speakers have edgewound aluminium wire on a 4" diameter. The wire forms oxides quite easily when not use for long periods of time. Get the cab in good shape and use it. As a side note, if you ever find a single Showman cab with the 15 and tone ring (sort of a ported setup that the 2x15 did not share), grab it and never let it go. Spectacular setup with great low end so the bass control on the amp can be rolled way back and there is still great low end yet the amp is not being asked to produce those frequencies as heavily therefore there is a lot more wattage available for mids and mid lows with the same amount of low end .... voila .... extremely high clean headroom if desired.

I use a one 15 cab with a Eminence Big Ben Speaker......It really does well..Someone mentioned the "Vibro-verb". I have a vintage one, and love it, but the EZG will make it run home to Mama!
