The GT 12ax7m mullard reissue, or any good chines 12ax7, are both fairly warm sounding tubes IMHO.

With Nos Dario Miniwatt EF86 and JAN Phillips 5AR4 Rectfier Then the Telefunken ECC83 sounds warmer than the Sovtex12AX7LPS With the JJ GZ34 rectifier and the NOS British military EF86 (CV290?) Then the Telefunken ECC83 sounds brighter than the Sovtek 12AX7LPS in my Route66?? Check my soundclips at: mbsb.psy.umu.se/clips/clips.htmlCheers: Dixiechicken!

Yeah they've had some production issues so it is a little hard to get them but the GT site says more should be available by the end of April.
You might have to search around a little

They WERE supposed to be available by Jan-Feb... now it's April?? I'm beginning to think this is a "vaporware"... I have a couple of the original GT12AX7Ms, and I love the tube, but at this point they are harder to get than NOS's... I think the new production Tung-Sol 12AX7 (which I think is a "Telefunken copy"?) is almost as warm as the GTs, and have switched to the Ting Sol's due to the fact they are readily available. I'm still looking forward to the GTs... if they ever come out...

I've used the GT mullard... but I thought they were discontinued? I've had trouble finding them. Not discontinued ... just out of stock as we retooled again as we keep making changes to increase stability.

I'm still looking forward to the GTs... if they ever come out... The Tung Sol 12AX7 new production is very different than a Telefunken. A Telefunken is a long plate and a great tube and the Ei 7025/ECC83 was a copy of the Telefunken ... actually made on the same tooling. The Tung Sol RI is a short plate tube, not as gainy and in fact it bears no design aspects of a real Tung Sol 12AX7 but if you like the tube it matters little what it is called or who makes it. The Tung Sol reissue / 12AX7EH (electro harmonix) and GT 12AX7R3 are all the same tube other than a getter change which changes nothing. They are a moderate gain 12AX7 in the current production lineup. In the Route 66 I prefer a long plate in V2 .... GT-12AX7M or 12AX7R2 in the GT world (sovtek 12AX7LPS) but that is just my personal preference.

A Telefunken long smooth plate ECC83 is the brightest and most articulate 12AX7 tube of all types. It is also the highest in gain of any 12AX7 as a general rule. I would not use these as phase inverters ... they will do a lot more magic in a tone / gain stage rather than a current driver stage. I love these in a Ghia in V1. In most other amps I find them too bright but in a Ghia they are magic to my ears. They are also great in a Mazerati or in V2 of a MAZ Jr. or Sr.

Great info "Myles", can tell us what it is about that tube - that makes you prefer it in the V2 position in the Route66?
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

That sort of detail is on my website in the phase inverter area where I probably delve into long plate vs short plate ... plate current output and saturation and compression in a long vs short plate tube. But .... rather than go crazy with numbers .... try this in an amp with a 12AX7 phase inverter .... If you have a spare ECC83S JJ and a 12AX7LPS Sovtek try each in the PI slot. If you can hear a difference, feel a difference and notice how the amp breaks differently then you have some choices to make. If you think they seem the same you are lucky and it will not matter what you use and that will save time and money.

+1 on the GT 12AX7M. I rolled through a bunch of new and NOS tubes and found them to be very sweet but potent.

Corey, I think one of the warmest sounding 12ax7's I've heard are the NOS Mullards. However, on Doctor Z's EF86 amps, I think the 12ax7 is usually a phase inverter. So it's probably more important to have a "balanced" tube, since most of the tone shaping is done by the V1 tube...in this case the EF86. I'd recommend searching for a warmer sounding EF86 if I were you. Good Luck, Brad
