Hey CC, A loop would be good but only if the tone could be preserved. Having said that, I think I will be doing a wet dry thing using the line out on my attenuator. I think that would be the easiest way to get some time based effects going.

UA and a Weber Mass. They both have a line out.

I actually sent an email with that very question (effects loop) and received an answer from Brent. He stated there is no room for an effects loop. They use the same back plate for all EL 84 amps, the just plug the holes for those which cannot support an effects loop. I also asked about a 1/2 power switch.... same answer; no! No biggie, I don't play tube amps to be quiet anyway. I just send my wife and kids out for some shopping and lunch and proceed to "move some air!" As far as the neighbor go..... I already have enough friends;<)

On such a high gain amp not having a Loop is really bad. I would have thought of buying one of these amps but there is no way in hell I'm re-amping or doing a Wet/Dry system. Bringing a head and 1x12 cab with a small pedal board and guitars is bad enough. Add a separate power amp and a couple more cabs.....you must be nuts. Lot's of other company's have put GREAT FX Loops in there amps that are around the same size as this amp, doing LOT'S more "stuff" (channel switching, Mid Boost, PAB) and have not compromised the amps integrity. The first amp that comes to mind is my Brown Note D'Lite 44ODE. The most amazing Loop I've used next to my Bogner XTC which is a close 2nd place. For clean amps it's understandable to forgo the loop. But high gain??? It's a big mistake not having it and a reason many other's have mentioned for not buying one too. They love the tone, but most want to be able to run some delay or other time based FX with there rigs and you just can't do it with this amp.

+1 jwr. I feel the same way about the Galaxie.
I REALLY wanted to get a Galaxie after hearing Tony's clips but I just couldn't do it because of the Loop issue. There is absolutely no way for me to Boost my solo's live without it in an amp with that much gain.

A Flying Dragon/RAT/Zendrive kicks some serious arse w/the Galaxie on leads....BUT....I have little use for any of them w/that rig. I can get all kinds of clean/dirt on the "clean" channel using the guitar volume knob. Lead time...stomp on the switcher...... ;D ;D ;D As for modulation FX, I haven't found that to be an issue either. Chorus is rich & full, delays are natural sounding. No loop required. You must remember, Doc designed this amp around a tweed super, per J. Walsh's request(no such thing as an FX loop then). Doc also told me, the Galaxie was just too loud for the Eagles' stage..... ...Ok then. Gimme a couple days....I got some toonage coming w/ZERO FX that make will you say....."NO FX??"....promise....

If the Galaxie is too loud for the Eagles then the Prescription ES he also uses must have no hope?

If the Galaxie is too loud for the Eagles then the Prescription ES he also uses must have no hope? It stands to reason don't it. The RX ES is just so damn loud, but it's hard to beat the organic nature of that amp. The harmonic content is off the charts.

Dude, your clips ALWAYS put a smile on my face. ;D I'm sure chorus will sound O.K. It's Delay that's never worked for me. My original tone sounds nice and distorted and the delayed tone is always screwed up, warbly, much cleaner (no OD) than my original tone and simply becomes a mess even with low delay times and single repeats. No matter the design of the amp, putting a delayed single into a distorting preamp OR poweramp doesn't work right.

Off the original topic The RXES is one very special amp and so far my favourite Dr Z. It is however, very, very loud. Too loud to play anywhere live for myself unless I airbrake it, which, in the end is not a problem and doesn't mess with the tone all that much. I have never played or heard a "Ray" in person but for a long time deliberated between getting a Ray,KT45 or Prescription ES for my cleans primarily. In the end the Prescription won out and I haven't been disappointed.

I think you gents are forgetting that the Maz GT is sort of Doc's "tribute" to his friend Ken Fischer. The GT is kind of a "Zaite-ized" Trainwreck. This is an amp designed to have the most direct signal path it can. It's an amazingly touch-sensitive, dynamic amp. You lose a lot of that by complicating the circuit by adding things like effects loops. It couldn't really be a good memorial to a friend, if the integrity of the circuit was compromised by adding features Ken didn't approve of, ya know? I've never used an effects loop, although several of my amps have them. I just have everything on my board, and switch from amp to amp. I'm not a huge effects guy anyway. I do like using overdrive and boost pedals for different flavors, but I use stuff like chorus, delay, flangers, and phasers pretty sparingly. Well, I didn't forget. It's a nice gesture for sure. But if a piece of gear doesn't work for you live then what's the point? I wouldn't buy a Trainwreck for the same reason I won't buy a GT. It simply won't work for me live. Forget time based FX for now. An even bigger problem is boosting for solo's. With that much gain there's no pedal on earth that will boost your signal through the front of the amp and give you more volume without also adding more gain, comp and noise. So what you end up with is mush. I boost my signal with a graphic EQ pedal in the Loop of my amps. The signal stays clear with no added comp, just more volume. It would be one thing if the GT had some clean headroom, but from the clips I've seen, heard and reports I've read it doesn't have any. It's a perfect candidate for an FX Loop.

The GT can defiinately be boosted from the front end, if you run the volume down around 9 oclock. It gets a lot louder. It doesn't really do anything for volume to boost it when the volume is set at noon or above. I have to admit I've never been a fan of loops in any amp, they just make the whole setup kind of complicated. I tend to set it at about 10 oclock on the volume,I use the volume on the guitar, on my Les Paul its clean at about 2 crunch from 4-7, and very nice sustain and solo volume above that. With time based effects, I expect the results would be mediocre. The EL84's are distorting a lot in this amp, and the delay/reverb would still get distorted quite a bit before it goes out.

A "psuedo" FX loop(pre in/out) is a butt simple thing to do for any competent tech. It will require two holes to be drilled(if not available). I had 1 of this sort installed in my 70's JMP super lead, using two of the 4 speaker out jacks that were already in place. Works like a champ.
Many old solid state PV's, Fenders, Ampegs, Rolands, etc. have the same setup from the factory.
You wont get any in/out level controls, but if you just HAVE to have a loop.........FWIW.

Hey CC, A loop would be good but only if the tone could be preserved. Having said that, I think I will be doing a wet dry thing using the line out on my attenuator. I think that would be the easiest way to get some time based effects going. Larry Actually, this is the best way to do it. I'm just a very dedicated Buffered Loop user. Send Return controls are good but my Shiva and Duende don't have 'em and I don't mind. There loops still sound great. My Germino doesn't have a loop and I ride the volume knob in the same manner that zdogma mentioned. It's a blast to do live. This comes down to a players philosophy on how they want there gear to perform onstage. I used to use a lot of pedals etc. Now I'm using high end switcher amps and I'm happier (for now). All these amps have high quality loops and I've grown to love 'em. For what little bit of tone suck I encounter by using the loop, which is virtually nothing with the cables and buffer I'm using, most are suffering far worse with the giant chain of pedals stacked in front of there amp. But like I said, it's all about the players philosophy. None are right/wrong. There's just what works for YOU. Cheers
