Hello everyone. I am new hear and joined because I got a Mazerati GT last week. I have been playing it ever since. There are several things that I like about the amp...most of which have been mentioned already but WTF here we go anyway.
- Trainwreck DNA - It is all over the place in this amp. Sure there is no presence control and only 2 gain stages etc but the searing rock tone speaks for itself. The amp is also fairly unstable. If you get near it with single coils watch out for the squeal. It also cleans up like crazy when the guitar controls are changed. Oh and it is loud as $*&%(.
- Bring Lots of Guitars - Each of my guitars has it's own voice through this amp. The tele has the mighty midrange bark, my strat sounded amazing. Not too much crunch but a large amount of round strat bottom. It was vibrating stuff off the top of the cab. This did not happen with other guitars. The humbucking guitars are the king of crunch and gain. Great sustain. I am loving this amp.
- Tweaks - I appreciate the fact that this amp was tuned to sound great with current production Groove Tubes. Lots of top end; a very chimy. As I understand, it is important to have a matched set of output tubes in there to keep the noise down. I didn't have a matched set of NOS tubes handy so the GT#5's stayed in there. I put in a couple of telefunkens, swapped one out for an EI smooth plate....and the swapped that out for a Amperex. The amp definitely got smoother but lost some of the top end definition the Chinese GT's added. I but the stock preamp tubes back in. I did, however, change out the 5AR4 rectifier for an NOS 5U4GB. I liked the smoother more compressed tone right away. (notes didn't just JUMP out there if they were picked a little to hard). And with the chino 12AX7's in there, there was still enough brightness to keep the clean sounds going. I also run a mismatch between the amp and the cab. The 8 ohm cab is plugged into the 4 ohm output. More additional grind! I love this feel.
- Speakers - I am just loving this amp through a 1960 slant cab with G12-65's. Great rock tone. I also like the way the amp feels using a tone tubby bomb. I'm not sure which one I like better cuz they both seem to have their place.
- Effects - They seem to mess up the input impedance thingy that happens between the guitar and the amp. They change the tone and feel quite a bit. Still working on it. With the volume control not quite a 9:00 I get a wickedly good clean tone with the guitar turned up. This may be the ticket to using this amp with pedals but we'll have to see if this pans out. It seemed to like the blues driver so far but that is about it.
All in all this is a rocking amp. I run mine with a Weber Mass most of the time. I lost my earplugs and can't get far enough away from the amp to crank the **** out of it. I am thinking of pairing this with a Two Rock or JTM45 or perhaps a Matchless for cleans. Looking forward to more picking.
Cheers
