I have a 30 watt Alnico Blue Dog and I'm about to either buy a Alnico Silver Bell to go with it, or go with a single Celestion Gold.
Which would you prefer?
Thanks!

I'm partial to the Gold, although I have two of the Blue Dogs and like them for different reasons.
It might help if you said how you plan to use them...

Hey Benttop- I was hoping you'd reply! I knew you had both...
What exactly do you mean about how I plan to use them? I've got a the RxJr head in a 2x12 cab and I'd like a Brad Paisley type of tone (of course I don't have the fingers) but I'd like it to get me as close as possble!
Does the gold have good low end? That's what I miss on the blue dog. It kind of farts out on the lows.
Thanks! Jason

That said, I think my RXES is the least speaker affected amp I own - it sounds great with the Blue Dog and everything else I point it to. If the RxJr sounds like the RXES, it probably won't matter as much which of the two speakers you use. By the way, I don't seem to have that low end farting out problem with my Blue Dogs - I wonder why?

I didn't vote yet as I haven't heard the Gold, but I have a 2x12 Open back with Weber Al. Blue Dog 50 watt with a Weber Al. Silver 50 watt and I personally like the 2x10" Weber Blue Pup Ceramic and Silver 10 ceramic 30 watt better. I haven't tried a single 12 at all yet with the Rx Jr. I also like the single 15", a Weber Ferromax. I haven't used any speakers with the RX Jr. yet that I needed any of the tone settings above 11:00.

Hey Benttop, do you the Rx Jr has enough power to push a Gold efficiently? I've avoided the Gold because I don't really think you'll get your moneys worth out of it with such a low powered amp.
I guess I'm leaning to a 1x12 Blue Dog with a better wattage match.

I guess I'm leaning to a 1x12 Blue Dog with a better wattage match. I wish I had more data to claim one way or the other, but I really don't. I've seen a couple guys on here comment that they are using a Gold with a Maz Jr. but that's about all they said. It's a pretty great sounding speaker, even at low volumes, so I wouldn't have any issues with trying it out, although it sure is an expensive speaker. For the RxJr, since it's 15 watts, I would think the Celestion Alnico Blue would be the Celestion option, rather than the Gold, but that isn't to say the Gold won't work - I think it will work phenomenally well. I think it depends on what else might be in the plan. The Gold sure gives you downstream alternatives that the the Alnico Blue doesn't. But again, the Blue Dog also sounds pretty fine with my RXES - I wouldn't rule it out either.

I guess my issue with the Blue is figuring out which wattage to go with. I'll go with the Alnico magnet, but what wattage? Weber's site says the higher the wattage the smoother the tone. Not really sure what that means. Less chimey? The options are endless, huh?
Thanks for the info.

Not really sure what that means. Less chimey? The options are endless, huh? Thanks for the info. My Blue Dogs lost all their top end when they broke in. So with an amp like the RXES or SRZ-65 that can generate more than enough top end, they work great. They didn't work as well with my first Mazerati because it didn't have quite as much top end as the RXES or SRZ-65 does. I have the 50 watt ceramics though - I would think the Alnicos would be a little better and Ted says over and over that the lesser wattage speakers have more top end. He also said his 30 watt Blue Dogs will take at least 30-40 watts, so I would expect that the 15 watt speaker may be similarly tough. I wish I had one here to try, to be honest. I bet they sound great...

The RX JR sounds wonderful with a Gold and I'd use a gold over a single Celestion Blue in a heartbeat with that amp... I have two Celestion blues in a cab that sounds very good too (I prefer the 2x12 Celestion blues setup with the Stingray= perfect... and is also amazing with the Maz JR) but I think with the RX JR I preferred the single Gold...
That said...
you also cannot go wrong with a Weber Bluedog and Silverbell with the RX JR... and sounds good to me with both the ceramic and alnico 50 watt versions... 30 watts work good too little less clean headroom but drive great...
My favorite all around cab is a 2x12 open back Z w/ ceramic Blue- Silver's that sounds great with EVERY Z I've ever played... personally I 'm liking 2x12's better especially with the smaller wattage Z amps,
so for that reason my vote is for the B/S 2x12 set up.
but for bringing out the LOUD in your face-ness of the RX sound... you cannot beat the Gold and might be the perfect 1x12 speaker for that amp, so if I had to use only use a 1x12 I'd maybe go with the Gold.
Course these will All get you to Paisley territory if thats what your're after but probably the Gold would be the best for that... and you could mix a Gold and something else like a lesser wattage Bluedog (or silverbell) for a neat 2x12 one-two punch.
Could also ask Guitarstan, he's got the Gold I played through his RX JR... WOW! ;D

the gold almost has too much bottom,, the bass knob is way back on my rx junior.. by the way jason,, you will have to pry the boss dm2 off my dead fingers,, forgot to tell you how much i like it,, the more you turn up your amp the better it sounds,,,

I went with the Blue and Silver (both 30 watters) in my Z 2-12 to go with my Maz Jr and absoluely love them. I originally had two Greenbacks in it, and they sounded good too but the alnicos blow them away IMO. They're both chimey but not as ice-picky as the 15 watters would have been. Nice and smooth just as Weber describes them. I really like how they compliment each other. The silver has a lot of low end for an alnico and the blue gets me that high end sparkle and mid range punch. They ovelap very well. Plus, it gave me versatily for any future amp acquisions since I wouldn't be limited to a 30w cab. Instead I'll have 60w. As far as the Gold goes i've heard good things but I wanted a 2-12 and I thought they were a little overrated power-wise for the Maz JR. I still get nice cone breakup with the Webers even though I'm using a Maz Jr. Ok so that was the long opinion, the short one is, go with the Webers, you won't be dissapointed. For just a few more bucks you can have a 2-12 instead of a 1-12. As usual, jmo, ymmv, yadda yadda...... Hope maybe that was some help..... Or, you talk to a real expert and email Ted Weber. He'll help ya out.
Later Mitch

I can't really add anything beyond what Jason said above except to say I personally prefer the Gold over the Blue or Silver but not by much. I find the GOLD with the RX Jr to be full, punchy, sparklie, chimmy and all with a great solid bottom end. I am using it in a duo and I need all of that fullness. I experimented with a second 112 Greenback and it worked out pretty well. In fact I plan to use that as my regular setup once we start gigging. Our first gig, a Halloween party I used just the GOLD because there wasn't enough room left on the stage to accommodate two 112's. The musician's in the audience were very complimentary of my tone ... Thank you Dr Z!
I have AlNico Weber and Celestion Blues, AlNico Weber Silvers, ceramic and AlNico Tone Tubbies and Vintage 30's all loaded in 112's. They all sound great with my Z amps. Depending on the application one may work a hair better than the other but in a pinch I could use any combination and with minor adjustments to the tone controls I would be happy with the results. Ah, I also have a Z 210 with stock speakers and they sound very nice too. Again it just depends on the application. In my current project we are playing covers including Nirvana, Audioslave, Bob Marley, Chili Peppers, Alice in Chains, JM Hendrix.....are you ready for this, we are not playing any country. That's a first for me but the singer is not tuned into country so there you have it. I did manage to sneak in two Johnny Cash songs by not refering to them as country music.

I'm saving for a Jr. and I'm probably going to get a convertible 12". Unless someone talks me into getting a Z-best In either case I'd like plenty of headroom at lower to mid volumes but plenty of crunch when boosted or at full gain on the guitar. What speaker would best do the sweet chimey cleans but break up nicely when push comes to shove? I should also state I'll probably be taming the beast with the master a bit so there might be a little interaction between the volume and master. But knowing me, I'll probably won't be going too low on the master so long as the drummer isn't throwing sticks at me.

If you want "sweet chimey cleans but break up nicely when push comes to shove" I'd say you are in the market for a Celestion Blue, or Weber Blue Dog. I'm sure some of the more experienced guys can chime in here, but what you describe is what those speakers give.
I've thought of replacing my Celestion with a Weber Blue Dog, but the guys keep talking about the Gold and it makes me think.

Well based on Benttops say so, ive pulled the trigger on a 1x12 with a goldie for my RX ES. And based on Curts experience and say so, ive also ordered a Maz Jr with a Blue.
You guys are gonna get me strung up by my appendages...
At least i will have tone :-)

In fact, Curt has me sweating over the idea of a 1x12 Maz Jr. with a Blue. And dang it, he won't part with his!

But then listening to Benttop's RxES through a gold compared to the Maz GT got me thinking that maybe I might not need so much breakup as I though. Still a little hard to say as the Jr probably won't push the speaker as hard so it could be apples and oranges - the gold might be too clean. But that RxES sounded pretty sweet without all the hair of the GT. But I'm going to look at the blues a bit closer before deciding. Thanks!

For the money I don't think the Rx Jr will push the Gold to where it is at it's best. I think going with a Blue would be the best match for the Jr, but that's JMO. It's a really great amp and it will sound great through all sorts of things. It's just what you want to get out of it is what it comes down to...and the money you want to spend.

I have 2 convertible Zs with the Golds in them. Every one of my Z amps sounds incredible through them. This speaker is the perfect mate for most of Z's amps.

All I know is when I played a Maz Jr. through a Z best with that set up it was incredible. Can't go wrong with that set of speakers. The G12 will cover the low end the the V30 has a punch mid. They overlap very well. You can always through a Weber Blue and Silver in there, but I think the stock Z best is great the way it is.
