To all experts . . . If you leave your amp set up in a room for extended periods of time - do you plug your amps/effects into any kind of surge protector/lightning protection. I know that their are power conditioners for racks so why not do the same for your beloved amps???

I just unplug the power cable from the back of the amp. If I'm not using it, I don't want power anywhere near it.

I keep them plugged into power strips that are switched off. I'd assume the ground isn't switch, therefore a lighting strike may do something but I've been lucky for a long time.

A power strip turned off can allow jolts to enter the gear thru the ground circuit and melt stuff. I used to repair office equipment here and surges and (especially) instantaneous dropouts would kill circuit board components, and the fuse wouldn't even be blown!
The best thing to do is unplug anything that's not being used.

Te funny thing is that I am in the uninterruptible power supply system business. I've only had one catastrophe with bad power. I had a lightning strike hit a steel flagpole in my yard that traveled along the underground "invisible dog fence" and blew that controller off the wall and welded my 200 amp main Square D breaker. So I guess it's just like the carpenter who's house is never finished.

I used to run all kinds of surge suppressors, battery backup and such for my computers. All they ever seemed to do was give me a false sense of security. Inevitably the problem that popped up was something the devices were unable to cope with in one way or another. I'm not saying they are worthless, but just because you use one does not mean you are immune. That's kind of what I was getting at with the pic above - there is always a disaster that your protective device cannot possibly cope with. YMMV.

I will say that the Monster Power surge protector/filter/voltage meter really does keep my stuff more quiet. Pops and other noises come through all my gear without some filter/conditioner. The voltage meter will tell my if there's enough juice for my beloved Mazerati. Sure, lightning may strike, so I try to unplug all my very important stuff during down times.
