I've planned on placing my order today for the Maz 38'NR, but I have some concerns as to the popularity of the Maz 18 Jr that most guitarist favor on this forum regarding the amp's versatility. yet, most of the owners end up add/changing out the tube configuration to achieve the sound and head move they were looking for. Having the option to do that is great. Personally, I would like to have purchased the Maz 38 Sr based solely it's renown characteristic, beyond that, is all good.
Now, with that said and considering I do perform different styles of music with the exception of Rock/metal. I would really appreciate your opinion on whether I'm headed in the right direction with the Maz 38 NR 1x12.
Secondly, does having the amp without reverb improve its sound and sonic response. Thx

I personally prefer the reverb version ... it is too good of a reverb to ignore.
Start with the stock tube setup and learn about the amp before you change anything. They come stock sounding great.

Thanks Myles,
regarding the tube changing. your response is my sentiment as well. If in fact the Maz 38 is as versatile as it is said to be, then this amp will speak in volume and is the one for me.

Thanks Myles, regarding the tube changing. your response is my sentiment as well. If in fact the Maz 38 is as versatile as it is said to be, then this amp will speak in volume and is the one for me. The MAZ amps are some of the most versitile amps on the planet. The MAZ 38 can cover everything from Vox tones to Matchess tones but with the right cab can even do Fender type clean tones with is a surprise in a cathode biased EL84 amp. With an open back 4x10 cab I will put a MAZ Sr next to any BF Super Reverb that I have played. Pretty shocking. Change to a closed back 4x12 with greenbacks and dime the master and turn the other level up 70% and voila ... sort of makes you think Marshall? Yup. SRV tones ... Texas blues stuff ... listen to Buddy Whittington sometime with his MAZ 38 / Z-Best rig. Yup ... pretty amazing amps.

The reverb vs. NR topic has come up here on the forum a few times before. It seems that everyone has their preferences.
A couple of years ago I went to Willcutt's and played all four versions- the MAZ JR and SR both reverb and NR. Even though I already owned and loved other Z's the MAZ's blew me away. I left the store that day with the JR NR head, but I just kept thinking about that SR NR. I preferred the NR versions of both amps- they just have that little extra harmonic complexity, gain, clarity, etc.
I went back and got the MAZ SR NR head about a month later. I still *love* both amps. The only tube change (other than replacing the EL84 #6's) is to install a NOS rectifier in each amp.
The SR is an incredible amp- Myles is right; use it with the Z 4X10 and I'll put it up against any Super Reverb; use it with an open back 2X12 and I'll put it up against any Twin. The SR does things the JR can't do- it's a little louder, it's smoother, and has the complexity of a four output tube amp. The JR, though, is pure fun with single coils, and has that gainy edge that the SR doesn't.
After hearing mine, one of my best friends (who is one of the city's top guitarists) bought a real nice MAZ SR 2x12 with a maple front. He always gets compliments at each gig on his tone.

Wow, This is the place for information. Man you guys have filled my wagon. I have never considered playing out of 10s but than there is a first time for anytime. I've decided to try the Maz 38 Sr/NR 2x10 configuration instead of the 1x12. I must admit to being a little nervous and at the same time anxious awaiting. of course its not the 4x10s but than this is a defining moment for me. Thank you for the comments and suggestions. I hope by micing just one of the 10s will be tonally sufficient..... My order has been placed!
